Subject: Window tint law for PA?
IP: Logged

Message:
Anyone in PA ever tint their front side windows?

I'd like to tint my front side windows (on the doors) to match my rear side windows (Club Cab Dak...) But can't seem to find a clear answer online about the tint laws here in PA.

I've seen that it has to have 70% or more light transmittance most places, but also have seen that argued on other places. Now what makes it worse is that I don't know what the rear side windows light transmittance is. Anyone?

Any input on this topic would be appreciated...I'm at a lost and really want to get this done.

THANKS!!

If i'm not mistaken i beleive each county/city is different so check you local law inforcements website and maybe that will help. Or call them and actually make them do something for you, maybe they will give you some info or a website?

The cop has to be able to see in, that's how the law is pretty much worded. On my Quad I got a REALLY light tint up front, somewhat lighter than the rear. This is because I just went to the place by me and said to give me the darkest tint that would still be legal. From some angles you can tell it's tinted, at some other angles you can barely tell. I was thinking seriously about getting it deeper but everywhere I went they said anything deeper wouldn't be legal. I'd have to pay in cash and they wouldn't give a reciept. So I think there is a certain unofficial percentage which most places have figured out will keep you under the radar with law enforcement, though I never thought to ask exactly what it was.

I decided to leave it as is because I live near Philly and I have known people to get 'fix-it' tickets. I have no interest in paying 100$ for something that they might make me pay more money to take back off later.

Many places have an actual percentage...and I believe most cops (at least in places where window tinting is strictly enforeced) have a gauge that they hold up to the window and it can tell if it's within the legal limits or not. No clue on the PA laws though...sorry.

I'd say, give your local police department a call and find out...considering you're showing them that you are concerned about keeping things legal, I'm sure they'll probably be more than happy to help you out with the info you need.

Not a bad idea...I do know one of the local cops. He's in the same fire dept as my father.

Thanks for the input and any more that may come along!

"(1) No person shall drive any motor vehicle with any sun screening device or other material which does not permit a person to see or view the inside of the vehicle through the windshield, side wing or side window of the vehicle."

As I said, the law does not set out a specific number, but just says someone standing outside the vehicle has to be able to see in. But I think most places have figured out a certain percentage below which you are highly likely to get ticketted and will tell you it is illegal. I'm guessing it's at about 70% or less.

I had the windows proffessionally tinted on my '01 QC and my '98 Camry. I told the place to go as dark as legally possible, which they did, and they gave me paperwork to keep in my glove box stating that it is legal tint in case I ever get questioned by law enforcement. I believe the legal percentage in state of Oregon is 35%. However, on trucks/vans/suv's you can go much darker on the rear windows then passenger cars. I can barely see out my back window in my QC when backing up at night!
Remember to use an ammonia free glass cleaner when cleaning tinted windows as regular glass cleaner can discolor the tint on your windows. Good luck, hope your glass looks as good as mine! Spacinjason

I didn't go to the links above so I am not sure if this applies or not. Years ago (around the late 80's) my brother and cousin went the the ND senate reguarding tinting. What they were told basically is that Federal law states 70% transmitance or 30% blockage (May be 65/35 can't recall 100%). Most cars come with around 25% blockage so your max Federal tint you can apply is about 5%. This is not noticable or hardly noticable to the naked eye.

ND has a loop hole where you can get a doctors letter which will allow you to exceed this limit. I don't know if any doctor will work but eye doctors do and mine at the time wrote mine for 50% (I wanted more). I had this on my Stratus and was pulled over. I showed the letter and then the police brought out his tester just to make sure. It is kinda a U shape which wraps around the window and checks how much light is blocked. After he did this I asked how light 30 is since I haven't found tint that light. We then went to his squad car and it was 30%. Also the way I recall is you can have the other windows painted black if you want as long as your windshield and front window aren't and as long as you have 2 mirrors (some cars don't have passenger mirror).

So given it is Federal law it is more a matter of are they going to enforce or not. That is the case you just have to find out and call.
