It's illegal to remove it...but if it's bad, by law, you're SUPPOSED to change it.

your not supposed to "bypass" or remove any of the original emmissions functions, that means that you can replace with a high flo but cant remove all the way.

From what I heard, its illegal to change in the first five years unless its broken. That means if you have a new truck and want high flow cats, you cant... by law.

No, it just means you're throwing away good catcons at your expense. It is illegal in the U.S. to remove or defeat a catcon or any other pollution control. They're guaranteed for 8 years/80K miles as required of the car manufacturers by federal law. Other emissions controls are similarly guaranteed for 5 years/50K miles.

But in some states, like MA, it's illegal to modify the exhaust from its factory configuration.

California emissions laws crack me up...it's a great state for vacationing, but I'd never live there for that reason. I don't even think my completely stock bicycle could pass emissions over there.

"I'm sorry, but the compound used in the tires isn't legal here in California and when they're heated up due to the friction between the tires and the pavement it releases dangerous gases that eat our ozone layer. We're going to have to impound it until you can purchase a better set of tires."

you could just chop the cat, then drop kick it across the yard and say "it's shot, i need to buy a new one" then replace it with a high flow cat. if you drive around with out a cat, eventually you will crack your valves. no matter how old you truck is, if your cat is "shot", then legally it has to be replaced...it depends on where you live on whether or not you can install a high flow.

You will have absolutly no valve issues if you remove the cat.
Technically it is "illegal" to remove a OE cat unless it has went bad. Who is going to check?
As mentioned some states are starting to pass laws reguarding modifications to exhaust systems. In some cases cat back systems will not be allowed or even headers. When OE craps out OE will have to be put back. MA appears to be the first, but others are considering similar.

if you don't have a catalytic converter, there is a possibility that when you shut the truck off, cold air can be sucked back up through your exhaust and hit your exhaust valve (the hottest part in your engine) and the drastic difference in temperatre can warp or possibly crack the valve. just to clarify.

gerkey4.7, personally i have never heard of this but to suck cold air back up the exhaust? are you serious? for a stock exhaust length that would be a lot of sucking. were did you come up with this?

gerkey4.7,
Total urban myth, absolutly no truth to it. BTW, does air flow only one way through a cat.?
Through the last several years on this board there have been dozens that have removed cats, worst case you have to run an O2 sim. to make the computor think the cat is still there.
