This might sound stupid to you but check the bulbs first. (trust me) If they are ok, I would be looking for a power and ground at the bulb socket harness when in reverse. Figure out the one your missing then go from there.

Well both are out and they were both working about 2 months and 1000 miles ago. So I doubt it is the bulbs. As for the ground all of the otehr lights work so they should use the same ground to chassis right?

How does the back-up lihgts work, I have the manual trans BTW, I know there is a sensor on the trans (where)? what does this do?

I haven't even had a chance to check fuses yet but I assumed they have to be on a circuit with something else.

yes/no?

Thanks,
Chris

The part you are looking for is the backup relay swtich. On my truck(1988 4x4 5speed)it is located top of the trans on the left hand side(drivers side) by the bottom of the gear shifter. I just replaced mine, the part was only 30.00$ but it was not fun to replace because there is no room to get any tools in to get it out or put it in. Working around the transfer case shift lever and linkage gave me most of the hassle. If you have a 2wd it should be easier.

Yes i am out of warranty unfortunatley...

I took it in for it 36k issues in June, then by 38k my backup lights had gone out and my heater relay (for the blower morot) had burnt up. Coincidence or not I can't say. But I will be fixing it myself.

Thanks,
Chris

My CE light also came on for the evap systems leak since the dealer worked on my truck. My gas cap ratcheting mechanism is broken (looks tampered) and I found a vacuum line that looks like it was cut so it would split when I was doing my HO cams this week... Grrr...

I hate dealers...
