I own a 1997 Dodge Dakota 4x4 with the 318. My question is, when I punch it and push the accelerator all the way down. My truck will buck or surge at about 4800 to 5000 rpms. It is like it wants to go, but it is heald back or like it wants to shift but can't hit the point. This only happens when I slam the accelerator all the way open. Otherwise if I accelerate slowly to wide open throttle, it will not have any problems. I am stuck and don't know what to do. Help me please.

kinda sounds like it cant keep enough fuel goin to it. how old is the truck?

Fuel delivery is my thought as well. Have you changed your fuel filter? That would be the first step to diagnosis. Start with the simple. If you really want to feel good... after you pull it off, shake it up and pour the gas out the back. It should come out black.

You can't change out the fuel filter on GEN 3s. Its made as a whole unit with the fuel pump. Its a crappy idea if you ask me.

the gen II trucks use an in-tank filter too. it's a pain the rear end, that's for sure.

i have this same problem with my 1993 dakota as you said it only happens when you unch it. I was told that it might be the tranny but idk i just let off a little bit then get right back on it and it will shift fine.
