Subject: Tires - 245/65-15?
IP: Logged

Message:
I'm planning to upsize my Dak from the stock 215/75-15 tires, and I was just wondering if anyone out there knows which brands/dealers carry 245/65-15's. I've been unable to find this size anywhere so far, although I have found references to it on the net - so I know it must exist :). It seems to be the closest upsize available on 15" rims (I can't afford new rims, so plus sizing isn't an option). By the way, I tried to search past posts, but entering the tire size confused this site's search engine, so I apologize if this question has already been answered.

Try a 255/65-15 instead. It's closest to your original tires overall diameter.
www.TireRack.com is the place to get what you need. Just type in the size.

The stock 215/75-15s have a diameter of 27.70"; the 245/65-15's have a diameter of 27.54" (.16" difference); the 255/65-15's have a diameter of 28.05" (.35" difference). So, no offense, but the 245's I'm looking for would be the closest to the OE diameter. Also in the "no offense" category, I am aware of other available tire sizes - I'm just trying to figure out my options.

As a technician I can tell you that .35" difference in tire diameter isn't going to make any difference. No offense taken. Your "options" as you put it are to use the tire size I suggested, or no tire in the size you are looking for.
I'm familiar with plus zero sizing. I went from a stock size of P255/65-16 to a P275/60-16.
Good luck in your search. You'll need it.

Gary, I appreciate the info. However, unless I am misjudging, the tone of your reply ("Your "options" as you put it..." and "Good luck in your search. You'll need it") tells me you *have* taken offense. I was *never* insinuating that you didn't know what you were talking about.

Conversely, you should not assume that I have no automotive knowledge simply because I posted a question (which, I admit, may have sounded like a newbie question, what with the oddball tire size). I may not be a master mechanic, but I do have several years of both formal auto tech training and field experience.

Also, re: my options being "...to use the tire size I suggested, or no tire in the size you are looking for." - I take this to mean that nobody makes tires in 245/65-15...you could've just said that in the first place.

Anyway...I have posted questions in this forum before, although not for a while (under Snuzn2 or similar monikers, until others started using them). This is not the first time I have had someone reply in a snide manner when I have had a tech question.

What is wrong with asking about options? Do you reply in a similar manner to anyone who posts what might be an unorthodox question, or disagrees in a civil manner with your original reply? I'm sure that if we met in person, we'd get along fine, have some beers, shoot the s---.

But I didn't come here for curt replies. I came here because, when it comes to tech info, this is the best Dakota forum on the net. I figured I'd give it another shot, & see if this time I wouldn't get the same reception I got last time I asked a slightly "unusual" tech question. Oh well.

my stock tires were 215/75/15 and I went with the 275/60/15

My stock rims were 6" and thats too skinny for the fatter tires. I went with an 8" x 15" rim for the Kumhos

toolfan, dak2, & Mark - thanks very much for the info. Regarding rim width, I'm not sure how wide my stock rims are; there's no listing in the manual or on the door sticker, and I haven't measured them yet. Not sure if this helps as to guessing the rim width, but the truck's a '00 2wd, & they're not steelies, they're 5-spoke alloys. Of the sizes dak2 mentioned, what would be the upper limit based on rim width? Also, did any of you guys notice a difference in speedometer accuracy after the tire swap?

P.S. -I realize it was kinda dumb not to have measured the rims before I started looking for larger tires; I'll have the measurements tomorrow, so for now please disregard the question about size limits relative to rim width.

you can safely put 235's on a 6" rim.

add 25mm for each inch thicker rim

285 on an 8"

Some have gone with wider tires than recommended but its not as safe.

If the truck is a "00" the stock 5 spoke aluminum
rims are 7" wide. Rim width requirements for
255/65/15 is 7"-9",for 275/60/15 it's 7.5"-9.5"

Since you're looking to upsize, have you considered the very common 235/75/15 ?
