Please help, My 98 Dakota sport 4x with the v6 will rev up about 500 rpm when it goes over a bump. It sounds just like when a tranny slips but its not the tranny. Only happens at highway speeds( well 98 percent of the time)

Don, I seem to be having the same problem with my 99 v8 cc, It was like the torque converter was unlocking and locking backup breifly just after i hit a bump. I checked the tv cable that runs from the throttle body to tranny, and the the connection to the throttle body where it mounts to the mounting bracket was loose and slipping out of the bracket, i adjusted it to the way its suppose to be and its been fine since, if it does act up again im going to replace the throttle posistion sensor, if you buy the haynes manual it explaines how to adjust it! hope this helps it worked for me!

It's the throttle position sensor (TPS) for sure. Buy it at NAPA or Autozone for $35, the dealer wants $75.

Now when we hooked it up to a computer it told us that the truck thought that the temp of the air coming into the intake was 158 deg!! Will the TPS fix that or is it the intake air temp sensor? My guru told me to get the intake temp sensor so I'll start with that since he is NEVER wrong.

Now I asked him if it could be the TPS and he said no. I have him ordering the temp sensor for me and I'll make sure I post weather or not it fixed the problem. Thanks to those who posted help for me.

Don,

If your IAT sensor is located in the stock position (intake manifold) then 158* is well with in the normal range.

That's why alot of us relocate the IAT into the intake tube of our CAI's. That way the computer sees a much more accurate reading when compared to the "heat soaked" stock position.

My '99 V6 did the same thing as yours does. A 300-600rpm increase at 55-80mph. It felt and sounded just like the tranny was slipping for a second or two.....It was the TPS!!!

Do a search on "TPS V6" and you'll see what I mean.

Make sure you report back on this thread so if it is the IAT, then we'll all know there's another posible cause to this common problem!

Changing out the TPS will correct the problem.
