Just changed the oil and filters in my 2003 4.7 w/5 speed auto transmission and I thought I would share the details. The pan is sealed from the factory with RTV sealant. NAPA makes a filter kit with a rubber gasket in case you don't want to use the RTV. If you do there is permatex available called "Right Stuff." There are 2 filters to change. There is the main sump filter and a spin-on filter next to it. I used oil filter pliers to remove the spin-on that I got from Wally World. The other filter is held on with 1 torx head screw on one end, then just pull the other end out. It takes 8 quarts of ATF+4 fluid to fill it back up. The local Dodge dealer here in Richmond, VA sells the fluid for $4.50 per quart. The price of the fluid has gone down. They price was $6.00 per quart.

Thanks for the info.
If you used the gasket, and if it is indeed rubber, check for leaks periodically, as the tranny heat may relax the rubber, causing it to "creep".

I recently changed my tranny oil and filter. I read on both the rubber and cork gaskets that you should not use RTV.

Dan, I don't think he's saying use both, but use the RTV, or use the gasket.

FYI, I used the gasket on my tranny fluid change two years ago (2002 45rfe), it has been seeping since it was put on. It actually hasn't lost enough to be topped off, but I'd recommend using Right-Stuff. I will be doing that in the next month or two.
