I'm still around...I didn't have a vice either. I can't remember for sure how I did it...but I think what I did was make a pattern that was drawn to scale and then I bent it to fit the pattern using vice grips where I wanted the bend and used pliers or a crescent wrench to fit the thread and act as prybar and bend it. Wherever I used tools, I wrapped a rag around the threads on the bar enough times to prevent damaging them.

Hrmmm...it's been soo long. Gotta make this quick...I'm bout to be running late for work. I bet I used a flat prybar for some of the bends where the above mentioned method wouldn't work. The flat prybar is one of those tools you can buy at a lot of home improvement stores used to remove nails from wood. Dunno the proper name for it...if you don't know what I'm talking about from that description, let me know and I can take a pic of it tonight.

What your referring to is sometimes called a Cat Claw in contractor work. You can get them in a flat bar type with bends on both ends, or a tubular style. probably be better off with the tubular style as it doesn't bend as easy as the flat style does.

Cat claw...that's it! I actually found the flat style to work better. While the tubular style doesn't bend nearly as easily, it tends to roll over much easier whereas the flat style usually will stay in place.
