Ten Tips for efficient engine operation which will improve performance and MPG in these times of higher gasoline prices.

1. Pay attention to how you drive.
Don't exceed highway speed limits. Use moderate-to-easy acceleration. Gas mileage is negatively affected by fast acceleration and fast deceleration. Use cruise control on highway trips. Maintaining a constant speed helps reduce fuel consumption.

2. Engine maintenance
Maintain a properly tuned engine. Dirty spark plugs do not create the maximum spark and cause reduced horsepower and increased emissions.

3. Limit reliance on air conditioning
Limit use of air conditioning, especially during hot summer days. Yes, we know it's not as comfortable but the issue here is saving gas.

4. Synthetic lubricants - Amsoil
Switch to synthetic motor oil and drivetrain lubricants. Independent tests show savings of five to eight percent using AMSOIL synthetic motor oil, gear lubes and ATF.

5. Air filter
Install clean air filter as needed. To get optimal efficiency from your engine, it has to breathe.

6. Aerodynamics
Keep windows rolled up at speeds over 40 mph. Open windows when driving over 40 mph can create a wind drag that will lower your mileage. Avoid use of roof rack. Reduce aerodynamic drag and improve your fuel economy by placing items inside the trunk whenever possible. Sun roofs also disturb smooth aerodynamic air flow and reduce mileage.

7. Tire Maintenance
Properly inflate your tires. Keep tires balanced and rotated regularly. Use radial tires for less friction between tire and road. Keep front-end aligned for better mileage and longer tire life.

8. Excess weight
Pack light and clean out your trunk. Every 200 pounds of unnecessary weight shaves one mile per gallon off your gas mileage. You would be surprised how much stuff most people carry around in their trunks that they aren't using.

9. Minimize Idling.
Idling any longer than a minute wastes gas and one minute of idling uses more fuel than restarting your engine. When possible avoid drive-thrus. Idling for as little as 10 minutes while you sit in line can waste 5 or 6 miles worth of gas. Limit warm-ups to 30 seconds. Allowing your vehicle to idle excessively wastes gas.

10. Plan and combine your trips.
Make a list and do all your grocery shopping once a week. Car pool, hike it, bike it or use public transportation if possible.

REDUCE AMERICAN DEPENDENCE ON FOREIGN OIL

Youre an idiot. A penny saved is a penny earned, and amsoil(any good synthetic) is proven to save $ in many ways, none of which you obviously understand. Youre a huge part of why people consume more then is produced. Why dont you just kill yourself instead of your grandkids. By the way, I think hes a sponsor of this site that you are using as your forum for idiocy. Do you not watch tv, read the paper, or do anything that has advertising? It might do someone else good to let it be known what a jackass you are, spewing irresponsible statements. Do some research before writing something someone else may take as truth. Wal Mart oil is not the same as a good synthetic, check numerous used oil analysis sites and find out. Heres one

8BANGER I dont care what the pros at nascar endorse. after all they are paied by the people to say. hey I run only M-1 in my race car and street cars I own. what they dont tell you is at the end of that statement they pay me to say that . so if I pay a racecar driver enough money I can have him say I eat crap and it tastes good. this is why I never buy what these people say is good. because they are paied to say this. and prob never uses the product. I have never heard a neg comment about amsoil. they seem to have a quality product and rely on word of mouth from their loyal customers to sell their product. I am sure if amsoil paied a pro to endorse their product you would hear amsoil all over nascar. major companies does this to try and keep companies like this under thier feet. but if you have a good product why pay a pro to endorse it? now thats something to think about.

and mark g this amsoil guy paied the fee to be part of this message board. and as long as the mods dont care about him advertiseing his product then who cares. I dont see him holding a gun to your head and say buy or else I will blow your brain out. and not all oils are the same even if it has the api seal. how many api seal oils meets the bare min. to get the seal and how many exceeds the api standards. I would rather buy a quality product than to buy wal mart brand oil. as they get whatever is the cheapest to put in their bottles. so one year it may come from lets say mobil and the next valvoline. is it wise to mix differnet brands. this I dont know but I would think not.

its like buying gas for your vehicle. do you fill it up at a name brand gas station or do you take your chance on an el cheapo gas station that gets their gas from wherever and maybe filled with dirt and water and then your engine is ruined. sometimes the cheapest isnt the best.

if you dont like this amsoil dealer advertising. then dont click on his links. it so easy. or complain to the MOD. but I bet when you tell him you are not a member he will tell you to stop wasting his time.

READ MY POST! At no time did I flame Amsoil guy, I have no problem with him posting here, we are both paying members.

I simply asked if Amsoil was better than MOBIL1.

And not all NASCAR builders are paid to run MOBIL1, fact is, there are very few sponsered drivers. Many of the crews use MOBIL1 by pure choice, why is that?

8banger,

Remember to compare Apples to Apples when comparing motor oils.

Are you looking for a LEADER or a FOLLOWER?

ExxonMobil Follows AMSOIL into Extended Drain Market ... repeat ... FOLLOWS!

** Amsoil Extended Drain (25k miles) vs. Mobil1 Extended Drain (15k miles) **

#1) Since I am always getting berated regarding Amsoil's prices ... please take note that AMSOIL products are available for less.

The suggested retail price of the top oil in ExxonMobil’s new line, Mobil 1 Extended Performance, is $5.79 to $5.99 a quart. That’s right in line with AMSOIL 5W-30 and 10W-30, which retail for $5.95 a quart. By registering as an AMSOIL Preferred Customer, customers pay only $4.85 a quart, and even less when purchasing by the case.

Motor Oil Technology

Motor oil technology has gradually progressed since the days of the earliest automobiles. In those days, standard motor oil drain intervals were between 500 and 1000 miles, and motorists had to switch viscosity grades with the changing of the seasons. The development of oil filtration and additive technology in the 1930s allowed drain intervals to increase to 2000 and later 3000 miles, while the development of viscosity modifiers in the 1940s allowed the formulation of multi-grade oils that could be used in both hot and cold temperatures.

According to AMSOIL Vice President Alan Amatuzio, the introduction of ExxonMobil extended drain oil is long overdue. "While AMSOIL INC. has certainly proven that extended drain intervals provide valuable benefits," said Amatuzio, "the fact that ExxonMobil is finally saying the same thing brings the message to even more people. ExxonMobil's move is significant in that more consumers will now recognize AMSOIL as the pioneer in extended drain oils and will benefit from the advanced technology we introduced 33 years ago."

Mobil1 Extended Drain Oil

ExxonMobil recently announced a new line of motor oils recommended for extended drain intervals.
It was only a matter of time before another company followed the path forged by AMSOIL over 30 years ago. Some motorists may recall that Mobil also followed AMSOIL into the synthetic motor oil business, introducing its synthetic motor oil several years after AMSOIL. The technology for extended oil drains is obviously available, but until now, the major oil companies have had other agendas. Marc Graham, who is president of Pennzoil-Quaker State-owned Jiffy Lube International, was quoted in a 2001 Lubricants World interview as saying, “At [PQS] we use a number internally that if we [shortened the drain interval] by 100 miles [for each car serviced], it would mean an additional $20 million in revenue for the company.” He also explained that “if we could move our customers to get one more oil change per year, it’s worth $294 million for the oil change alone and $441 million in revenue, when you include the ancillary products and services customers typically buy along with the oil change.”

Mobil1 and their discontinued 25k motor oil

Mobil backed off 25,000 mile oil change intervals in 1974.

Mobil briefly recommended 25,000 mile oil drains in the 1970’s. It’s not difficult to figure out who they were trying to compete with. AMSOIL was the only other company offering synthetic motor oils and recommended 25,000 mile drain intervals. However, it may be that because vehicle manufacturers weren’t yet comfortable with extended drain intervals, Mobil retracted its extended drain recommendations and simply recommended motorists follow the intervals specified in their vehicle’s owners manual. Of course, traditional oil change recommendations also allow Mobil and other motor oil companies to sell a lot more oil. Everyone wins but the customer.
__________________________________________________

AMSOIL stands apart from the competition.

AMSOIL has always formulated its products to be the absolute best, continually researching ways to make its already outstanding products even better. Other oil companies, however, are beholden to shareholders, and one could speculate that their incentive is to maximize profit. They formulate oils down to a price, rather than formulating them to be the best they can be. Then, they price their products to maximize profits. In addition, AMSOIL has 33 years of experience blending premium extended drain synthetic oils. That’s 33 years worth of proven performance in the field.

A close look at ExxonMobil’s new long drain motor oil line reveals that two are petroleum based, one is a synthetic blend and only one, Mobil 1 Extended Performance, is a full synthetic. The petroleum based products are recommended for 5000 mile drains, the synthetic blend for 7500 mile drains and Extended Performance for 15,000 mile drains. However, a look at the fine print reveals that ExxonMobil is still recommending drivers follow the oil drain recommendations listed in their owners manuals during the warranty period. AMSOIL synthetic motor oils are recommended for 25,000 mile or one year drain intervals in both new and older vehicles. The AMSOIL warranty stands behind this recommendation.
__________________________________________________

AMSOIL has recommended 25,000 mile/one year drain intervals since 1972.

AMSOIL delivers the highest quality lubricants on the market. It’s the AMSOIL identity, and it’s what customers expect. Al Amatuzio coined the phrase “extended drain interval,” and from the beginning, AMSOIL synthetic motor oils have been formulated for extended drain intervals.
__________________________________________________

Vehicle manufacturers are pushing for extended oil drain intervals.

Vehicle manufacturers in Europe have been recommending extended oil drains for years. In fact, the average drain interval in Europe is 10,000 miles. Vehicle manufacturers in the United States are definitely coming around to extended oil drains as well. Most owners manuals from recent model vehicles recommend 5000 to 7500 mile oil drain intervals. In addition, oil life monitors have become increasingly common on today’s vehicles, allowing and encouraging motorists to increase drain intervals up to 12,000 miles, even when using conventional oil. Vehicles equipped with an oil life monitor no longer recommend oil changes based solely on mileage. The system measures engine operational data such as temperature, revolutions and speed to determine when the oil is nearing the end of its life.

The motor oil industry is faced with the extended oil drain interval issue.

The success of oil life monitors has posed a threat to motor oil companies who insist oil must be changed every 3000 miles. It becomes increasingly difficult to maintain this position when vehicle manufacturers are recommending significantly longer intervals with the use of their oil monitoring systems. This is no doubt one of the reasons ExxonMobil finally introduced a line of long drain motor oils.

AGAIN --- AMSOIL products are available for less.
