Ive got a 95 3.9 auto cc and my buddy says i cant take on a 4 banger ranger. i dunno what size the 4cyl is and i dont know what year it is (maybe 98-2000) but its a manual reg cab short bed. definately lighter than mine, but im just not sure, anyone have any experience on this. ive raced a 93 4.0 ext cab ranger and won, so im fairly sure i might win.......

I've driven a '96 that was a customer's at my dad's shop. Yes, it's a light truck, and honestly it was fun to drive, but it's got no power. You've got the advantage with the 3.9 almost everywhere. In '96 they were 2.4 or 2.5. I think you would be racing a 2.5 4 banger. It's got about 150 crank horsepower at the best.
Beware though, of a hushed exhaust note- some people have swapped in the turbo 2.3 motor, which can really sing if you want 'em to. Couple that with the light weight of the ranger and you could be looking at a sleeper truck that could blow away your 3.9.

I had a Mazda B2300 (same as Ranger), with the 2.3L inline 4, it was rated at 112hp IIRC. Definatly a pig. I topped it out once, 99mph power limited, I hope thats enough to tell you its slow.

i have a 88 dakota 3.9l 4x4 and a 2k ford ranger 2.5l stepside regular cab.
my 2000 ranger shuts the fuel off at 92mph until it drops down to about 80mph,
as for accelleration, the dakota is about equal to my ranger(ranger is a tad faster), but the dakota is alot heavier being a long bed 4x4.
as for engine specs.
2k ranger 2.5l I4 auto tranny will have 4.10 gears
- 2,507 cc 2.5 liters 4 in-line engine with 96 mm bore, 86.4 mm stroke, 9.4 compression ratio, overhead cam and two valves per cylinder
- Unleaded fuel
- Multi-point injection fuel system
- 62 liter fuel tank
- Power: 89 kW , 119 HP @ 3,000 rpm; 146 ft lb , 198 Nm @ 3,000 rpm

Ok I test drove a V6 Ranger right B4 my Dakota and I didn't think it had as much power. So I can't imagine what it would be like against a 4 cyl. It just didn't feel as strong as the Dak. If you can't beat a 4 cyl. Dak then there's something wrong with your truck... that or you can't drive.

I doubt the 3.9 could be taken by a ford 4-banger. I raced a 95 3.9 dakota against an 4x4 dodge ram w/a 360magnum and smoked his doors off. 3.9 is the bomb!!!

A 93 4.0 probably makes the same power as a 98-2000 Ranger, maybe even less actually.

well my 318 rc sb dakota vs my brothers 2000 ram 1500 ext cab sb 360 was all me from takeoff to about 100 mph, then my limiter kicked in becuase my speedo is messed up
and he kept going becuase he doesnt have a limiter ala Superchips
so i cant see a 3.9 smoking it
the 5.2 was faster. but not that much faster that i would think a 3.9 would be it

Well...since this is an old post, I'm not gonna waste too much time on it...
You gotta be careful with some of them Rangers...I've heard a lot of em have really high gears so even though their engines are weak, they can still get up and go.
