Subject: The Tornado?
IP: Logged

Message:
I know the general feeling is that this thing is a waste of money. But has anyone ever tried it? The reason I'm asking is that Pepboys has it listed in their sales add that came in yesterday's news paper.

Just wondering why a store would waste valuable advertising space if something really sucked that bad.

I think i'll stop by and ask the manager what his thoughts on it are. I'll post the answer later.

If i hit the lottery on tuesday, I'll buy one and give it a try :P

It isn't to much of a waste if you are making 35% on it selling it.

from what i read about it years ago on here was that for our particular truck's intake design it was not useful. or was that for a throttle body spacer? dunno.

i would think that all the swirling air would stop swirling once it hit my tb's butterfly valves.

I just read an article in popular mechanics that went over all the popular gas saving gadgets, and their conclusion was that they were a waste, including the tornado

The purpose of a good EFI intake is to straighten the air flow and speed it up a little before it hits the combustion chamber. The purpose of the tornado is to create swirl and turbulance; which will slow down the air speed.

While something like the tornado MAY increase efficiency of a carb engine, there's no way it can help with EFI.

Surprisingly enough, I saw Sam Memolo (sp?) from Two Guys Garage plugging this thing.

It's just a gimmick that won't really help any engine. Think about it. the blades don't even swirl the air - they'd have to be powered or fixed to do that. It's the air thats swirling the blades, not the other way around. Ol' P. T. Barnum would be proud of these folks.

Sam endorsing anything that they put infront of him. as long as they pay the show for the plug. he did alot of that when he was on shadetree mechanic on TNN (now spike TV.).

you can have anything plugged on a show just as long as you pay them enough. they dont care if it works or not. after all they make no money on the sales of the item.

That Popular Mechanics article that tested it even said that they actually lost horsepower with the Tornado in place.

Autozone carries the Tornado too. I actually saw a guy looking at them the other day with an Autozone associate. I went up to him and told him about the Popular Mechanics article and he left without buying one.

Car & Driver did a dyno test and it lost HP with the Tornado. Hey, in light of the current fuel crisis you could advertise a $50.00 bottle of doggie doo doo as increasing fuel mileage and there will be people buying it. If there is the potential to make money on it ANY store will sell it! Today more than ever you need to educate your self on products. For the most part, the days of trusting the person behind the counter are over.

I would have been surprized if it didn't cause a power loss - basic physics - for every action, there's an equal and opposite reaction. The power stolen to spin the blades has to come from somewhere - it slows the velocity of the incoming air.

The Tornado doesn't actually spin. It just sits there in the intake and is suppossed to "make the air spin" with it's fixed blades.

I'll review the Popular Mechanics to see how much of a power loss they registered with it...

The Tornado reduced peak horsepower by "more than 10 percent" and this other similar one they tested called the "Intake Twister" actually increased fuel consumption by 20 percent while the Tornado provided no significant change in gas mileage.

If you do a search on Ebay for "Intake Twister", you can find that one.

The article is in the September 2005 Popular Mechanics, the article starts on page 105.

They DO work if used in conjunction with fuel
line magnets, Coil intensefiers, and moth balls
in the fuel tank. Also pour some STP down the
intake to make the pistons slide easier. Really
it works.

You really should have your facts straight before you give your "expert" opinion and trash a product that you have obviously never even seen in person, much less used.

The blades DON'T spin, they are fixed, they are shaped to spin the incoming air charge.

And before anybody accuses me of using one, I don't, but I do expect accurate facts on any and all topics.

Take it easy Darryl. Kowalski is one of the few people that posts on this site that actually knows anything. So he had wrong info on the Tornado. Big deal. A few of us here with automotive experiance actually try to be helpful only to get bashed by someone that doesn't have a clue, but thinks because they've changed a set of sparkplugs and blew away a Cavalier (which most likely wasn't trying race) at a stop light makes them a master tech! Some of us don't even own a Dakota anymore, but STILL post here trying to be helpful to current Dakota owners.

If you're expecting "accurate facts on any and all topics" then you're at the wrong web site. This site is so full of BS posts and responses these days it's shamefull! When I first found this site a few years ago it was one of the best forums out there. What happened?

I'm now stepping off of my soap box ;)

i still post here, i dont really drive my dak anymore,
its getting a few more cylinders put in it as we speak, and ive been working on it for the past month, 2 more months and it should be done
life is too busy to get it done in a week SOOO
i jsut cant wait to get it done it was so fun to drive before, i cant wait to have the 318 in it, then it should be a blast. A hell of alot more fun to drive than my Ram, that thing is kinda boring, maybe a lift and some mudders would fix that, but the paint isnt all scratched to sh1t and sun spoted like the dakota, i think thats why its so fun. Im not trying to keep it looking overly perfect
anyway back to topic
the tornadoes suck, almsot all the little "fuel" saving devised dont do anything but waste money
the thing that will change mileage more than ANYING is driving habits

Figols,

I agree with you 100%. I used to be on this site
almost everyday a couple of years ago, but it
has really gone down hill. If we all had to
register on this site it would stop alot of the
B.S.

I still have my '99 Dak and it's the only ride that
I own.

Just keeping 'em honest!

Darryl - OK, I'm busted - I'll own up to it. I've always been behind factual information too here, so I guess I deserved that. Saw a similar gimmick at a swap meet with movable blades and figured it was the same. But general concensus is still its junk; maybe you could really shame me by buying one to see for yourself if it really works ? Good luck, I'm almost surprised people are still interested in these with all the bad reports they've received for years; but I guess people want to believe anything that might work with gas prices what they are. I retract my statement about the spinning blades, I'll take your word for it . How are you so familiar with them, did one of your freinds get suckered ?

Darryl, you're an uptight jackass who needs to get his own facts straight.

Reach up, pull the handle and flush yourself down the big black pipe.

The Tornado is a gimic and even the FTC knows that.
