Someday i'll have a diesel. Hopefully by the time i've exhausted my current dak, DC will pull their heads out of their arses and offer a 6cyl. diesel option for the Daks. It doesn't have to be a big diesel...just a diesel.

Considering how extensively Caterpillar has been
involved in diesels in the U.S., why don't we
see light-duty truck sized motors from them?

RE: Diesel Dak? How bout a Cummins Dakota
IP: Logged

Message:
I am currently in the process of installing a 3.9l 4 cyl B serries Cummins engine in a 90 Dodge Dakota. It had a 3.9L V6 gas engine. The 4 cyl Cummins engine is the same engine as Dodge offers in the Ram pick ups, with two less cylinders. A GM 700R4 Hydramatic transmission will be used with this engine as Cummins has an adapter readily available for GM transmissions with Chevy bolt pattern. If anyone is interested, I can provide photos as work progresses.....Johnny B

Johnny B- I,m very interested in your engine swap. Where did you get the engine, and how common are they? What kind of torque and horsepower have they got?

My brother has that same motor on the shelf.
He is going to put it in a Gen III as soon as he
finds one with a five speed. He was going to
use the Ram five speed. Are you using a 2 or
4 wheel drive? I would like to see some pics
if you get a chance.

The engine is a 1988 4b out of a step van application. I bought it from a truck junk yard for $2000 in upstate NY. Im sure you could do better if you shopped around, ebay etc. They are out there but not as plentifull as the 6b. Ive actually seen 6bs a lot cheaper than the 4s. My engine is advertised at 105 HP and 350 ft pounds tourqe. Geared right, it should do quite well in a dakota. My 90 Dakota is a 4 wheel drive and as such there is little room down below so I will have to fabricate a custom oil pan to clear the differential. I will send photos when I return from the sandbox in two weeks.

I'm told that engine is in Case skidsteers also. I've heard they have quite a bit of vibration, but I'm considering using it for a swap also.

Actually its too big for a skidsteer. It is commonly used in larger construction equipment, ie; backhoes, steam rollers, stand by generators, etc. I put a 4b in a 1500 GMC years ago and while it deffinately is a vibrator, it was not intollerable and once underway, it was fine. However, the Dakota is much smaller and lighter so well have to see. Im looking for motor mounts that have a soft rubber isolator cushion to minimize the transfer of vibration th the chasiss.....JB

Has anybody heard lately if the Diesel Daks are going
to happen in the US anytime soon? As a potential
buyer, is there anything I can do to voice consumer
interest formally to those who can actually make it
happen? Would there be any hang-ups in buying one
outside the US and bringing it here? (A road trip to
Mexico sounds fun, but not if I can't enter the US with it
or register it later.) Most of all I'd like to patiently wait for
Dodge to make it's move but does anybody know when
and with which motor it will most likely happen?
