Subject: Help! What should I do?
IP: Logged

Message:
I've been changing my oil this afternoon. I've done a ton of work
on my truck and performed many oil changes before, but I've
never had this happen. I have a 3.9 and the last time I had
wonder lube do the change because I didn't have time to do it
myself. Now I've drained the oil and was going to take the filter
off. I put the wrench around it as near the base as I could, but
when I pulled on it, the filter crushed inside it. So now I've got a
crumpled filter, and if I use the wrench anymore it'll just crumple
more. What should I do to get it off?

Thanks for your help everyone.

Try to get a pair of channel locks as close to the base of the filter as possible and remove it. Make sure you position the channel locks correctly for removal. If that fails punch a hole completely through the filter close to the base with a long punch or screw driver and try to remove it.

try driving a screwdriver through it to use as a handle. i've had to do that before. or use a chisel and put it against the base of the filter and hammer on it to turn it.

Then don't ever take it back to Wonder Lube because you'll Wonder how to get the damn thing off again. Those places never hand tighten. I think they believe they need a over-torque wrench for everything.

Well, I've been trying your suggestions, but with no luck. I don't
have channel locks large enough for the filter. I did punch a
screwdriver through it, but when I pulled on it, the metal of the
filter just tore. I'm going to try to get in there with a chisel yet,
but its in a damn tight spot. This thing is coming off one way or
another, I just don't know how yet. Any more suggestions would
be appreciated.

Yeah, screw Wonder Lube. I'm sick of all these jerks making it
impossible to do anyting yourself anymore. I'm doing it myself
anyway because thats the only way I can use amsoil products. It
hard to believe I live in WI and can't find it anywhere but online.

Daddio's given you the right method for what to do once the screwdriver rips it apart. I'm not familiar with the 6 but you might get a better angle on it by pulling the wheel closest to the filter (use a jackstand or something solid to support the truck) and aproaching it from the wheel well. That's how I have to get to mine with the plow frame anyway, gives me good access. Had that happen to me once too with a different vehicle; now when I get something new I always get the 3/8 ratchet style filter wrench to fit it, can't go wrong that way.

Lead, follow, or get out of the way

Sometimes the gasket swells and adheres to the block. That's usually what makes them darn near impossible to get off.

Get a very narrow putty knife or gasket scraper and carefully drive it between the filter base gasket and the block. It's possible to damage the block, so be carefull and use a shallow angle.

Failing that, rip off as much of the filter as you can. Then - very carefully - use the gasket scraper or screwdriver to pry up the filter base plate. That should get is loose enough to unscrew.

and some dopes tighten the filter so darn tight that the filter can actually makes more then slight contact with the block, which bends and ditortd the can , leading to leakage, hand tight plus 1/2 turn is plenty. anything less can and usually does leak. even seen them so loose the filter anmost was ready to fall off and leaking severly.
