Subject: transmission band adjustment screw up??
IP: Logged

Message:
I changed the fluid and filter in my transmission over the weekend. Now when I shift into reverse in "clunks" into gear. When I try to drive, I can't get out of 1st gear.

I adjusted the band as per the haynes/alldatadiy instructions. Is this a result of the band being too tight?

Also, I have a very slow leak. I torqued the bolts per instructions as well. What is the best way to remove the old gasket?

1995 CC 4x4 3.9L auto 42RH transmission.

scrape both the tranny gasket surface and the pan gasket surface with a putty knife. Take the time to get it all. Wipe it with a lint-free cloth and check for little bits of gasket you missed. Smear fresh trans oil on the pan and set on the gasket. Thread in the bolts by hand as far as possible and torque GENTLY to specs.

Most aftermarket tranny oils are not as good as Mopar. I heard Amsoil is good, but never tried it. Do not put in tranny additives.

From experience.

turned out that the leak was not really a leak, just the fluid from the under carriage.

I still can't get the reverse/low band to adjust properly. it's a little lose i think. it revs high before finally shifting. Any good clues as to how to adjust it properly?

I finally got it adjusted properly on the 8/31. It was a big pain. The instructions in haynes/alldatadiy.com were not 100% accurate for me. Probably based on the age/milage. I basically did it on feel and trial and error and test driving in the driveway. The kit from advance comes with the rubber type gasket, i recommed that over the cork. I had to drop the pan about 5 times total. I also installed a drain plug from advance too - very handy!

The truck has more power than it did, no slipage, no thumping, etc.

Dan M,
Can you give more details.
I just did the same yesterday.
I have the same symptoms, but I am at least a quart low 'cause I didn't have enough Amsoil ATF.
I guess I pumped out more than I should have.
I ordered more ATF, so I'll have to wait a couple of days.
Did you use a torque wrench?
What tranny do you have?
How many turns did you back off?

Thanks

OK, I see you have a 42RH. Same as mine.
How do you secure the new drain plug?
