Subject: Class Action Lawsuit / rotors

Message:
I was wondering what you thought. I have 2004 dakota / 19000 miles, and my rotors are warped beyond repair. Brake pads however appear to be brand new still. Dodge won't fix the problem, and it appears that several people on this site have the same problem. Suggestions? I've filed with NHTSA. Should there be a class action lawsuit against Diamler?

On mine it was the calipers causing it, after buying two from Autozone, I haven't warped a rotor since :)
I think whoever is making Chry. calipers is either machining them out of round OR machining them to tight to piston clearances.

Have the rotors by any chance been changed in the '04 model year? I just changed my brake pads yesterday, and my original rotors are fine. I got 80,000 + miles on the original pads, and original rotors are staying on the the truck ('03).

33,000 on my 2003 4 wheel disk. Still have half of my pads left and no warping.
Many of my miles are towing. Id expect MINE to warp then if at all.

Been fine. Wonder if it's quality control or something?
Or are the brakes bigger/different when you get the 4 wheel disk with tow package?

Like JJ said, buy a pair of AutoZone China-made rotors for $60.00 and be done with it. I replaced my originals 17 months ago with the Autozone L-cheapo's and they work perfectly! Can't say the same for my Chevy Caprice. Put a set of the China rotors on it and they warped in 3 months.

I just replaced them today. I went to Advanced Auto and put Bendix rotors and pads on. Everything appears to be working great, but I've only drove around and tested about 5 miles. Time will tell. Thanks for the input everyone.

hey Angry Dak -
what caused the warpage on your rotors?

warped rotors are the effect, not the cause.

i've got 70k+ miles on my stock 1999 rotors, turned only once.

when my catylitic converter died, i asked the dealer why. they said sometimes the parts just fail in them and rip up the insides.
But a brake rotor is just one piece. it can't cause itself to warp. YOU HAVE TO ASK THE MECHANIC WHAT CAUSED IT TO WARP!!!!! this way you can prevent it from happening again, whether its by changing your driving habits or by replacing a bad part that affected the rotor.

I'm so sick of seeing posts complaining about warped rotors. we can't help you unless you find out from the person who diagnosed the rotors as warped what may have caused the problem. there's really no way for us to know since there's a vast number of things that may have caused it.

but something DID cause it. like i already said, the rotor cannot warp itself. its a hunk of metal. even if its inferior metal it still will get warped by a different part.

if the mechanic can't/won't tell you what caused the problem, don't pay them! take the truck to a different dealer! if you're diagnosing it yourself, don't stop diagnosing until you find the cause!
theres no point in replacing the rotors until you find the cause since it may just happen again!

By any chance were you driving through water? The cooling that the water will have on a rotor will warp them and I think this is probably the most common but as stated above something caused it. The rotor wouldn't be warped from the factory if that is what your thoughts are.

Jeff - the CAUSE of these crappy rotors is the small size and garbage engineeering. They are obviously not big enough to handle the heat generated by stopping these trucks. MORE METAL is the only answer. A bigger rotor and pad will produce less heat and will not warp.

2001 Club Cab - 130,000 kms - 5th set of rotors - slotted and vented and warped to sh1t. (Paid a lot of money for them too)

i think dumb should change his driving habits. i've got 50k on my '00 QC and still have more than 1/2 the original pad and no rotor warpage. i am beginning to think a lot of these warped rotors are from sticking calipers. my bro in-law had to change the calipers on his '02CC @ 24k. warped the rotors too.

I have 34,000 on my 03 and I can just now feel a lil and I mean very lil warpage in my rotors. could 4 wheel disk just preform better than a disk drum setup.

like others have said its not the rotors warping by them selves. its a prob causing them to warp. you can have a calipier sticking, your rear drums are not adj. right. your wating till the last min. to stop and stomp down hard on the pedal.

The argument that the warpage is the effect and not the cause is specious at best. Any idiot can see that rotors do not warp by themselves; applying the brakes causes the warping.

I have never had a vehicle warp rotors like my Dakota does, and don't say driving through water or poor driving habits warp rotors. That is stupid and only shows the lack of experience and knowledge of the person making those claims. I have 25 years of driving under my belt on at least 35 different vehicles of all types.

Dodge Dakotas are known for their bad ball joints and warping rotors, end of discussion. Both problems are caused by poor design, end of discussion. Dodge knows it, my dealer service manager told me Dodge was aware of all the problem with the 97-04 Dakotas.

As for the class action lawsuit, good luck. DC has tons of money and hundreds of lawyers and you don't.

I wish we were all as smart as you. And thanks for calling yourself an idiot, you saved me from doing it. (Any idiot can see that rotors do not warp by themselves).

25 years of driving on at least 35 different vehicles of all types??? If it's that many vehicles in that short of years, my guess is you aren't a very good driver.

I guess you are unfamilar with the concept of having more than one vehicle. Maybe if you're promoted from burger flipper to fry chef you'll have enough money to own two, perhaps 3 vehicles at once.

The hat design is what causes rotors to warp along with alloy wheels.

There...I stated the design flaw is simple English so flaming dickheads like you can understand it.

Now go hang yourself.

so that makes you and expert huh? why you think doctors make the worse paitence. becasue they think they know everything. you may think your the best driver out there.but I bet everyone can point out flaws in your driving habits.

quote WELL: The hat design is what causes rotors to warp along with alloy wheels.

if this was the case why isnt my rotors warped along with everyone that has stock rotors. the only flaw I see is in your statement. if the hat design was the flaw or alloy wheels then mine would be warped along time ago. so I suggest you go back to flipping your own burger and just because yo umight of stayed in a holiday inn express. doesnt mean your an expert on brake system design.

For well oh well and all the other morons out there.

Just because you don't have warped rotors doesn't mean therer isn't a problem with the rotors on other peoples trucks.

It's like the ball joints. There is a design flaw and Dodge finally was forced to acknowledge it.

Perhaps you do have warped rotors and you're just too fukking stupid to know it.

Just because you're some dumb fukking punk pizza kid with his first vehicle and you like to read web boards and rattle of the "knowledge" of other fukking morons does not make you an expert either.

No capitalization, improper grammar (isnt) and no punctuation.

I forgot I'm dealing with a bunch of stupid, trailer park dwelling morons who dropped out of school after kindergarten.

Why do I even bother trying to enlighten these fcuk-witted arseholes?
