Subject: Hurting leg?
IP: Logged

Message:
I know this is a weird question, but I drive a 99 Dakota, and whenever I start driving, within the first few minutes my leg starts hurting. Its like a nerve kind of pain, and it gets pretty bad. I don't know what it is, and I don't know what to do about it. It might just be me, but does anyone else out there have this same problem?

You might try a lumbar support, AND in answer to .boB
sarcastic question, "Where's your wallet?" you might try taking
your wallet out of your pocket. I found it made a big difference.
AND since then, I have spoken with other folks who also do not
drive with their wallet in their pocket because of leg pain!

The wallet in my back pocket was the source of my leg pain. It's an easy fix.

Hurts like hell, doesn't it?
Adjust your seat so it's a bit more upright, empty your back pockets, and use a thin but firm lumbar support.

To relieve the lower back pain,i had to do some work (a lotta work) on the sit.
Other than that the up right position is the worst for me, once it forces the back muscles to be stretched or tensioned. AS the back rest reclines, the tension releases too.
Just don`t do it to much because that can cause you to be to far from the wheel and force you to reach to far, causing more pain. After all, the best thing for these pains, is whatever position works. Good luck.

That wasn't sarcasm. I ask my patient's that question all the time when they complain of back/leg pain. It's often part of the problem, especially older guys who have huge wallets. I also ask women with shoulder and upper back pain how heavy their purse is.

I have a small wallet. But when I drive my Cobra with small racing seats it's often a problem. And I know what you're thinking, so don't say it :)

Well i'm with you bigdave on the poor part. I never have much in my wallet. But anyway, It's my right leg that's hurting. My wallet is in my right back pocket. I've tried driving without a couple of times, and I think it helped a little, but it's still there. I know removing the wallet will help with blood circulation and that helps with the pain in the thigh, but it's my knee that hurts, right below my kneecap. like the ACL(i think its called). I will try taking my wallet out again. Thanks for all the advice.

The quads in the anterior thigh converge to form the major extensor ligament of the leg, allowing you to perform a kicking motion. The ligament encapsulates the knee cap, and connects to the front upper leg, on the body prominance you feel at the very top of your shin bone.

If the pain you feel is just below the knee cap and above that prominance, and worse when you sit, it's most likely that ligament, or possibly the back part of the knee cap (chondromalacia).

Acute nerve pain is generally dull, vague, and aching, with occasional sharp "lightning bolts" shooting up or down from the main area of pain. It is immediatly relieved by removing the cause - such as changing position. Neuropathic pain where you describe is very uncommon.

Musculoskelatol pain tends to be sharper, more localized, and may actually be worse when you move around, then gets better. The first few steps out of the truck may make you limp a bit.

Pay carefull attention to ergonomics. Make sure your leg is pointed straight ahead, and your ankle is at a neutral position, and the foot is straight up and down on the gas pedal. It may be just a rotational position change is all you need.

If you still don't get relief, somebody with the proper skills needs to examine your knee and try to localize the problem. Stop by the house and I'll take a look :)

One other thing, did you play football in school?

To answer your question .boB, I didn't play football at all, ever. Actually i've never been in any sport. I did weight lift in highschool, but thats been a couple of years ago. I do mountain bike, and that could agrivate my knee. I did take out my wallet today, and that helped. what helped most of all was: I put my seat back a little farther than I had it, I lounged down in the seat a little more, and just relaxed, and the majority of the pain went away. Thanks for your information that you wrote.

I'm glad it's better. Sometimes a simple change is all it takes.

The reason I asked about football is it's been a personal survey question for a long time. Years ago, whenever I met a young guy with knee pain, the answer was always "Yes". Over the last 5-10 years, that asnwer has been changing to "No". Don't know why, just something interesting - to me anyway.

Anyhow, glad you're better.

.boB,
While we're discussing leg pains and you obviously know what you're talking about...just curious if you could give me a little insight on what exactly I screwed up in my knee a while back. I was messing with a wasp nest trying to get rid of it from my deck (on the 2nd floor) and got swarmed so I took off down the steps...missing the last 2-3 steps on the bottom and hyperextending my knee. I couldn't walk without a serious limp for about a week and had issues after that where I couldn't stand for long periods of time on it or it'd start throbbing and feel like it was going to give out. I'm stubborn and hate seeing doctor's so I just took it easy on it and for the most part it's better (happened over a year ago). Occasionally though when I'm at rock shows and such where I'm standing for hours at a time, it'll start throbbing pretty badly until I switch my weight over to my other leg. I bike a lot and it usually doesn't give me any issues except occasionally will throb as well. Any explanation for what I messed up and will it slowly heal itself completely as long as I take it easy on it...or is that considered "healed" after a knee injury? Also, would a knee brace help it out? It's not bad to the point where it's affecting my daily routines...it can just be a bit of an annoyance at times. Thanks.

Josh, you give a great history for a meniscus injury. Doesn't really sound like an ACL/PCL issue, fortunatly. But meniscus doesn't ever "heal", meaning it won't generate new tissues like skin, bone or muscle. So when damage is done, it's done.

Surgery for a meniscus injury is simply a dust and clean job - get the damaged tissue out of the way so it doen't interfere with joint function. In your case, I wouldn't recommend surgery. Because you've damaged the protective tissues, it won't provide the protection you need in certain circumstances - like standing up for long periods. For now, it's just something you'll have to live with.

As for the brace, I rarely recommend them. When you wear them for long periods, the muscles get lazy and lose tone. Recovery can be a bear. When I do recommend them, it's for a patellar locater or a hinged lateral support brace only during certain activites (like footbal).

Unless I read to fast, the one thing I didn't see mentioned on here is...Are you driving with just your toes on the gas pedal or the whole foot/ball of your foot? Just using the toes will place a lot of strain on the rest of the leg and cause it to go numb. My friend is an ortho surgeon and he will also ask that question to people with leg pain (right leg only). Moving the seat forward just a bit will help. If that's not the case, disregard this post.
