So whats your point? Everyone knows Dodge makes better motors and can take more miles overall then a generic motors vehicle. I've owned 7 chevy's and 10 Dodges over the years and the Dodges seemed to have better motors in comparison.

Hell, I got over 300k miles out of a 90 Dodge Dynasty and it's still running good for the guy that bought it.

Try Googleing "record milage" and you'll find a volvo has the record followed by a Plymouth slant 6 taxi cab. No chebbies can be found...sorry.

Let's compare longevity and performance of those engines old enough to have a track record:

4 cylinders-Dodge 2.2 to a chebby 2.0.
6 cylinders-Dodge slant 6 to a chebby straight 6.
8 cylinders-Dodge 318/340/360 to a chebby 305/327/350.
Big blocks- 426 hemi/440/383 compared to a bearing spining chebby 396/427/454.

Yup, I wanna run right out and get a piston slapping bearing spinning GM now...

Does't matter...it's still a GM product ( I say that only because you started it by being obnoxious). Every manufacturer of goods has some lemons in their bunch. GM is no different. I work with a guy that has only 8k on his Z-71 and it's been in the shop 17 times already, mostly for electrical and tranny problems. My 2001 Dak has 81K and has only been in for the ball joints (under warranty). I win this round. Wanna go another round????

To "ME"
Go to the V8 Dakota forum here and find out for yourself. There is a thread on just this subject.

Jeez, a few guys on the web finally manage to get a few miles on their Chevy’s, getting close to what Dodge's have been getting for years and we are all suppose to fall to their feet now or what?

Wow....a thread about mileage on a Chevy Forum.

Here's a thought.

Maybe a Google search??

Then you'll find things like this

http://www.allpar.com/old/club.html

Hmmm....a REGISTRY of 200K mile owners??

Thanks "ME". I've been looking for a good GMC/Chevy site. I'm not trying to sound partial (having owned a Dakota 4.7 and now a Sierra 5.3), but the 4.7 has been out since 99 now and I haven't heard of one hitting 200K miles. There's been quite a few posted on these boards that have blown at around 150K miles, but I don't recall seeing any that have made it to 200K. Is that truly the case? On the other side, the GM 4.8 & 5.3 have been around since 99 also and I see them all the time with 200K or more on the clock. In most cases these trucks are doing harder work that most Dakotas (I don't know any Rams with 200K on the 4.7 either). What do you think is up with that?

I'm not trying to start a big debate, just looking for facts. I posted this same question a while back when I still had my Dakota because I started to worry about the longevity of it, but I didn't get any good answers. Just wise as remarks which seems to be rampant of this board lately.

We have a 92 Chevy Silverado shop truck with over 280K miles, rear main seal just went so it needs to be changed, and tranny has been rebuilt, and that's it! But we believe in 5K oil changes on all of our vehicles(20 total).

I work with a guy who has 483K on a 4/Runner. Always uses Synthetic oil and a bypass filter. Another guy has a Dak with 210K. Took a page from the other guy's book and runs Synthetic and a bypass filter also. Sometime it just depends on how you take care of them and others it just the luck of the draw.

We're getting near 150K on our Chevy vans all the time here and then they get newer ones trading in the other ones still running. We drive them balls to the wall too. But it's NOT like the Dodge ones don't as well.

That said. Chevy now has some long lasting small block engines. But in the past. Fukk that. You'd be lucky not to have spun a bearing yet alone the cam going flat by a little over 100k.
Sure there were some freaks going some miles, but they were MORE known for the flat cams and worn bottom ends than anything.

The newer Vortec engines are lasting a lot longer than the older ones.

But Dodge V8's have been 300K+ engines since the 60's. PERIOD.

As for the Big 3 V8 engines, the next in line would be the Ford 351/302 which also went 300k miles in many cases without a rod knock or a flat cam.

Actually. I've NEVER seen a flat cam in a Ford small block. Chevy just used soft metal, plain and simple!

With fuel injection being as tuned as it is. Most engines should run many miles unless they just have weak parts or rings. Like Mitsubitchi was plagued with for all them years.

Insert your Chevy joke here:

You've heard the Chevy slogan "Like A Rock". The difference between a rock and Chevy is the rock does burn a lot of oil .. ha ha. I bet Bob Seger drives a Dodge.

This guy never heard of a Slant 6 or a 318.

Here a few words of wisdom for the Chevy guy
"If you can find a better car, buy it" ... Lee Iacocca

1995 Dodge Cummins Diesel.

1 MILLION miles.

Verified/certified/documented.

Bragging about "this" brand or "that" brand is one thing.

Here's proof.

Now, who wants to argue with documented proof?

I don't think it's a big secret that Dodge was known for MANY years to have good engines from the 60's - 90's, which was one reason I went to Dodge from GM even though I've had nothing but excellent trucks from GM. I felt comfortable buying Dodge knowing the history of the 318 and 360 in particular, but what happened after the 90's? It seems every engine from the 2.0L Neon to the 4.7 is plagued with longevity problems. Not just the engines, but the entire vehicles. They look great when new, but the closer they get to 100K the rattier looking they are. I go to the auctions every month and it's no secret there that a DC vehicle that OVERALL has held up well over 100K miles is a rare find. Compared to other domestic and foreign vehicles of the same vintage. Anyway, Back to my original question which everyone seems to overlooking.....Where are all of the 200K 4.7's? It's been out since 99 just like GM's 4.8 and 5.3 which well documented to go well over 200K. Where are all of the 200K 4.7's???? Again I don't want to sound partial. I'm just interested in hearing facts.

I haven't seen all the 4.7's "blowing up" posts either. But for some reason people that DON'T have one say they blow up???

Can't deny the fact that the 318 is probably THE most reliable V8 gas engine, period. But people should not make up sh*t about the others.

BTW. It looks like I will be making a trip to Payson, AZ this weekend to go pick up a 1973-ish Plymout Duster (minus the engine and tranny and many other parts) that has a straight body for a drag racer. I also will be picking up a engine that is there as well.

Guess what engine?

MOPAR all the way
