Looking for people with new Dakotas. I am considering a 4WD quad cab 4.7, 6 speed. Any recalls, mileage, is the 6 speed good? Any info appreciated.

The towing capacity is lower (5200#) with the manual tranny as opposed to the 5-45RFE (#5650) with the 3.55 axle. The 3.92 axle and the 5-45RFE gives a rating of 6850#. I can't seem to produce a result with the 3.92 axle and 4x4 and the manual tranny. I pretty sure it's available that way. It should be good for close to 1200# as it makes for the auto tranny. If this could be a factor in your purchase you should keep this in mind. Check out the Towing Guide to get the specifics regarding the vehicle configurations you'd consider.

To me that is a major negative: I would much rather have a stick than a slush box on my truck. Oh wait a minute, I do!

It appears that the new 6-speed tranny is not as strong as the NV3500 5-speed tranny it replaced. The NV3500 gives a 100# higher tow rating than the auto.

A last recommendation: get the LSD rear-end (Anti-Spin).

I have an 05 Dakota but it is not a 6spd so I'm not sure I can answer all your questions.

My wife would never drive a stick... So that was out for me!

Mine is a Quad-Cab 4x4 SLT with the 4.7-(H.O.) and 5spd Auto Tranny. It comes with the 3.92 gears and LSD when you get the H.O.pkg.

The 4.7-H.O. seems to have good power and, even with the limited slip, I can get some tire spin on dry pavement, that's also with the 87-octane.

Dodge recommends the 91-octane to get the best performance but mine runs fine on the 87. With the price of gas today I'm not buying the expensive crap every day. Maybe on occasion, just to get the extra zip or for towing something heavy!

It is a heavy truck but it handles pretty good and has a solid feel! Unfortunately I haven't had to tow with it yet so I can't give any feedback on that. The weight would likely be an asset though for keeping a heavy trailer under control.

I haven't checked my mileage yet... I've only had it about 6+ weeks so It's still getting broken in! I can tell you it's better than my 96 Ram though ;) !!! Not that that is a huge revelation.

I am happy with mine so far though... It is great for haulin the family. Hopefully that will help you decide.

Sorry I'm not able to help with the tranny opinions. Hopefully my 5spd auto will hold up...

Well at least the 05s have the 7-70 warranty. The 06s are not going to have it I guess and that sucks! That was the main reason I went with the 05! Well the $6,000 price reduction with all the deals and rebates helped too!

I'd also recommend you get the LSD if you can! It keeps the tires from breaking free unless you want them to! Really helps on wet pavement, snow, or sandy roads.

Anyways, Good luck with your descision! I'd recommend the 05 dakota, but I do wish I had more time with it to give a better opinion. Later, Glen

I bought a new QC SLT 2WD 4.7 6-speed just four weeks ago. I traded in my '02 QC SLT 2WD 4.7 5-speed. I LOVE THE NEW TRANS!; it has about half the throw distance of the old 5-speed. I haven't noticed any difference in acceleration or mileage and I already have over 5k miles on it. I'm sure the new trans has higher ratios, it redlines sooner in every gear, and I have the same 3.55 rearend. Even sixth gear turns higher RPM than fifth in my genIII.
