I see there's a lotta people in this forum that seem to know a thing or 2 about general mechanics, so i have a question about a friends lawn mower i'm workin on and can't seem to figure out what's causin the problem. I'm a large diesel mechanic in the militay so i don't deal with little a$$ engine's like this very often. I'm pretty sure that there's not enough vacuum being produced in the cylinder during startup to open the leaf valve, and i do know that both the carburetor and the spark plug is workin just fine. This lead me to believe that the rings were shot, so i broke down the engine and pulled the piston. The rings are fine but there's obvious burning on the bottom end of the piston below the rings. Does anybody have any idea's on what could be causing all this? i'm open to any suggestions.

are you sure it is a 2 stroke LAWN MOWER engine? I have never heard of one. Weed eaters yes, but not a lawn mower...

yeah, it's definetly a 2 stroke. i know it's rare, hell i was really surprised too but it's also really old (lawn boy) and they don't make 2 stroke lawnmowers anymore i don't think. it's old but still definetly in good enough shape that after a tune up it should run like a champ after i figure out why there's no vacuum.

I don't have your answer; but they still make 2 stroke lawn mowers - selling point is they claim that 4 stroke can starve for oil mowing hilly terrain.

Lead, follow, or get out of the way

Are you positive the rings are good? Isn't the symptoms you described with the burnt lower end the result of blow-by? Have you checked the oil/gas mix for contaminants? Do the valves into and out of the cylinder work properly?

Is the seal on the bottom of the crank wet > And is that bottom crank bearing in good shape, not wiggley > This is the most likely place to lose your vacumn if infact all is well as you state > the last of the 2 stroke lawn boy motors are going fast > No more are to be made > With out question they are one of the best most reliable mowers ever made > good luck
