Subject: Replacing Rear Pinion Seal...Sucks??
IP: Logged

Message:
So, I have a 2000 Dak with 100k miles on it and my pinion seal is leaking in the rear. I got underneath it today to change it and I couldn't even get the drive shaft off! I removed all 4 bolts...wouldn't budge. It's not necessary to remove the universal joint is it? Or could it just be seized like crazy on there? Well, regardless I called my dad across the country who has my manual (little bro has a '04 dakota at home) and asked him to check into the job. He starts telling me that the amount of tourque for the bolt holding everything together is critical and that it's 200+ pounds. I'm working with all hand tools and I figure if it takes that much to put it on it's going to take way more than that to get it off because of the corrosion. Should I give up or is it not as bad as Chilton's says??

200 Ft Lbs??? No way.

I haven't done this task on the Dak yet. But I doubt it's 200 Ft Lbs. I have power tools. But usually hand tools are all i can get on some of the bolts back there.

Are you saying all 4 bolts are pulled out, but the two pieces of metal are stuck together?

May need a bigger hammer, that's all.

But to be honest, I haven't looked back there to see how mine's bolted together yet.

He's right, Graphite.
According to my FSM, the nut that holds the companion flange to the pinion shaft has a minimum torque of 210 lb/ft.
The bolts that hold the propeller shaft to the companion flange get 80 lb/ft.

Oh, yeah yeah. DOH!

I thought he was talking about the bolts holding the drive shaft to the pinion flang, whatever.
NOT the large nut on the pinion. That WOULD have lots of torque. :P
He was talking about the 4 bolts being out and it not coming apart still. Didn't occur to me he was talking about the large pinion nut when he mentioned torqing it.

Yeah guys, I was talking about the large pinion nut but I still couldn't get the driveshaft off only because I didn't try too too hard until I knew if I could do the whole job. All the research I did online first made me think I could handle it no problem but after we looked over the Chilton manual I think I'll be taking it to the shop. That much tourque I don't think I could ever get it off with hand tools.

Really not that bad > You use a 18" rachet > line yourself up and put feet on wrench and grab the frame with hands to keep from sliding away > I've done tons of these on verious autos > Use a good lifetime warrented rachet wrench > I did manage to strip the gears in one > DO NOT PUT FEET ON TIRE AND PULL WRENCH WITH HANDS > I lost an EYE TOOTH DOING THAT

That nut sucks, if you can get the tool to hold the pinion it makes it much easier.
