I know that these Dakotas are famous for brake warping and caliper seizing and such, so here is my question....

I replaced the front brakes on my 99 SLT 5.2 about 350 miles ago after getting tired of the screaming brakes and the shaking steering wheel (typical of warped rotors I know). After replacing the pads with Ceramic Pads and the rotors with H/D rotors ($45 each) I am again getting the annoying braks squeal from the front left side.

Anyone know of any "tricks" they may have run into along the way to get this annoying problem to stop? Like I said the brakes and rotors have about 350 miles on them.

did you put any brake grease on the back side of the pads? no i am not kidding. that usually does the trick.

yeah if you didnt put that grease on the back it can cause squeals. also I know the ceramic pad on my wife car came with shims. did yours come with them and did yo uput them on? my wifes dont squeal. you might also have a rock or something in them. I know mine picks something up and squeals

I have never heard of putting break grease on the back of the pads. I did not do this but I did grease everything else (caliper sliders) good. So, you put the grease on the back of the inner or outer pad (or both) next to the claiper?

These are ceramic pads (my first set ever ceramic). I will pull the wheel off this weekend and look. I also noticed that the rotor on the side that is squeaking is getting heat stained much more than the right side. I know the breaks arent sticking (alread fought that issue).

apply it to the backing plates of both pads. evidently when you apply the brakes the grease keeps the metal backing plate from rubbing on the piston and caliper and causing that squeaking.

i learned the hard way many many moons ago. so now when i change pads, i make sure i have that grease on hand. or some people use silicone adhesive. you can't use reg grease because of the hi temps.

A new development:

I looked at the rotor that is squeaking the other day through the rim and noticed X's all over the rotor. I put my finger on them and they were smooth and in no way sticking out or cutting into the brake pad.

I looked at the other side that is not squeaking and no X's. What in the he@@ are those X's?

Disc brake squeal is generally caused by the pad vibrating in the caliper. A little grease on the back of the pad at the contact point will usually resolve it. I like to use Permatex Disc brake Anti-Squeal instead of grease.

However, ceramic pads are a whole new technology, and a differant story. Ceramic pads are very popular with repair shops, and not because they work better (they don't). The only advantage to ceramic pads is that you can't hear the squeak. The pad vibrates at such a high frequency that you can't hear it. Don't know about dogs. Also, some ceramic pads are not recommended for towing.

If you're getting a squeal from ceramic pads, there's a differant problem that grease probably won't help. The X's you mention are probably from overheating. Sounds like the caliper was not fully releasing. Lots of reasons for this.

Origionally I had a problem with the right side not oging back together right. When I made a right turn I would get a grinding sound. I took it apart and checked everything and put it back together. Since then no problem.

The left side is going to get my attention on Sunday. I hope it is just another caliper issue that a re-seating wil fix.

Another question...On my 99 there are bars of metal coming from the outer front break pad. From the looks of it they are tensioners of some kind. My question is, where do they go? Right now I have them on the bottom of the arm assembly. They are long enough to go on the top also, but I really have no idea where they should be positioned.

Anyone know?
