Subject: Whoa! My ignition switch is HOT!
IP: Logged

Message:
Hola fellow Dakotans. My first post. Let me start off by saying this is the most dependable vehicle I have ever owned (and I have owned em all). So here is my question: My ignition switch gets SUPER HOT when the blower motor is on high. Any suggestions? I had a switch go bad 2 yrs ago. Then a few weeks ago I lost switch #2. I replaced it but now I was curious. I felt it and noticed it got very hot. Upon dissection I noticed the old one was partially melted.
Peace and love and mopar 4ever.

What year Dakota? Reason asked is, maybe they are
all runnen hot and we don't know it.

I assume when you say hot, you're at the switch
itself, not at the key?

1993 - it gets hot right below the key. There is a Torx bolt at the bottom. That thing gets really friggin hot - but only when the fan is on HIGH for >10 minutes. I took off the cover and it got so hot there was a big brown spot on the switch. I was thinking blower motor but the thing seems to be blowing fine (I know that may not mean that its OK)

Well I replaced my blower motor. It was pulling ~6 amps and the new one I bought was pulling ~4.5 amps. The difference is noticable on medium speeds but on high it still gets hot, although probably not as hot as before.
