Subject: Rims rubbing on calipers IP: Logged
Message: i just bought a set of 17's for my 2001 dak 4x4 and they are rubbing on a small section of my calipers. the rims came off of an R/T and im guessing they won't fit right becasue either the R/T was rear wheel or not 4x4?....anyway my question is can i grind down that part on the caliper or should i turn down the inside of the rim (lots to play with on the rim) or both?....any help would be appreciated

Message: I definately wouldnt modify the wheels, it can possibly throw off the balance. And grinding the brake caliper is not advised either. It's difficult to advise without seeing how much you rubbing you are talking about.
A wheel spacer might work, I know they make a 2" for the Dakotas. Just a guess though.

Message: I've put aftermarket wheels/tires on every vehicle I own and twice I've had to grind the front calipers. Removing a small amount from the caliper to gain clearance usually doesn't present a problem. I've never taken more than 1/8 inch off and wouldn't want to. Common sense rules here, and if the area of the caliper that is rubbing is relatively thick and the amount needed to be taken off small, you should be ok. Every situation is different, that's where the common sense comes into play.

Message: ya it's a very small amount of rubbing so i figure i could take off a small bit ( less than an 1/8th) of the caliper, common sense like you said. As for the spacer i've heard it puts a lot of force on the bearings and can throw the handling all to sh*t, so im not really looking at that, plus the studs aren't the longest... anyways thanx for the input guys

Message: I think I have a set of 3/16" spacers in my garage cabinet from my former truck (non-Dakota). They never got used, still in package. I could probably see giving them away for the cost of shipping.

Message: Those spacers are most likely a different bolt pattern then. I think I remember some of the gen 1 & 2 guys having to do some slight grinding of calipers or attaching bolts to fit gen 3 rims, never heard of it causing a problem with the caliper.

Message: Thanx but i just stopped off at my local partsource and ordered some 5/16" spacers.... if that doesn't solve the problem then i'll take a bit off the calipers or just sell them...
