I have a 1995 Dakota 4x4 ext cab with a 5.2. I have been hearing a noise off and on for a while, tend to hear it more when I am making a slight turn in either direction. Can't pinpoint where it is coming from. The best I can liken it to is a piece of re-bar dragging under the truck on pavement...no idea what it is. U joints are all in good shape, everything under the truck appears in good order. Truck has 115K miles, most everything is original, no modifications.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

It might be your cv joints in the front. Check and see if your boots are in good condition. If they are cracked and all the lube has leaked out the cv joints could be gone.

I'm getting a noise from the same area too but and it is a pop and it only once, it dosn't do it all the time. I have been told in the past that 4X4's do that because of the front universals but this one has have cv joints. Now it is normal right? most of the time when it does it i am turning from a stop and turning the wheel hard in either direction. I did check the cv boots and they all look good (they better the truck is only about 1.5 yrs old) I'm not real worried about it but i thought id make sure because i drive 25 miles to work every day and they are all highway miles just about, the driver wheel on my 89 probe falling off at 70mph was enough for this lifetime it don't want it to happen again

I have 2004 Quad Cab 4x4 3.7litre engine 355 gears in the back and have not modified anything on it ....yet
