Subject: Front Brake Rotor Replacement Question
IP: Logged

Message:
Hey all,
I've got a 98 cc 5.2L 4x4. I'm having a problem trying to replace the front rotors. I've taken the caliper off and hung it by a wire to the side. I've taken the cotter pin out and removed the axle nut. I figured that was it. The rotor should be free to remove.

Now on my 2wd I had, the rotor basically fell off at this point. But this is a 4x4 so I figured it may be a tad bit different. I've followed the Haynes Manual as well as called up a Dodge mechanic to ask what the problem is. They both indicate that the rotor should just pull off and away from the lugs. The mechanic said a friendly tap with a rubber mallet should help it off. Well I've tried that and more. There has to be another nut or something else keeping this sucker in place. Any suggestions? Thanks.

These things can really get welded together. Soak it good with a quality penetrating oil like PB Blasterand let is sit for a while. Then persuade it with a rubber hammer. If you don't have a rubber one, use any hammer you have and a block of wood.

BTW< WD-40 is not a penetrating oil.

If your replacing the rotors anyway you can use a 3lb hammer not only on the braking surface but also on the area around the lugs and on the side. As boB said soak it in pb and let it work for about 1 hour. Also look for the retaining clip on a lug if they're original rotors.

Man those things must really get welded together then. I was beating this thing down with a punch and ball pean hammer. I am replacing the original rotors whenever KRC ends up sending me the ones I ordered (ordered them around June 25 this year). A few weeks ago a guy named Marty said they got the order and they were working on it. So in the meantime I am replacing my upper and lower ball joints because the lowers are shot. Then ran into this whole "can't get the rotor off" problem in the process. So I want to be somewhat careful with them til I get the others in the mail.

I'll try the penetrating oil next weekend. I had sprayed liquid wrench around the lugs and into the lug holes before I posted my first question. That didn't seem to work so I was at a loss. Guess I'll try it again only use more liquid wrench. Thanks for the info guys. We'll see if this works.

I took a tip from my Nissan and Tacoma pickups.
Removed the Dodge rotors and drilled and tapped a couple holes per rotor in the wheel stud area. If the rotor is tight, I just thread in bolts and turn them until the rotor comes off. Did it to wife's Jeep, too.

Those things can really get welded on. I beat on the rotors on my Durango for about 15 minutes before they broke loose. I'd try the soaking then beat on them. Good Luck, Mike

The rotors of my 03 QC were stuck on there, I applied Liquid Wrench, heat and a couple thousand blows with a dead blow hammer and they refused to come loose. Got out my trusty crow bar, found a good place to anchor the crow bar behind the rotor and gave it a good sharp pull, POP they came loose. Both fronts were stuck on there and it took a crow bar to apply enough pressure to pop them loose.
