Subject: Code 12...

I have a '96 5.2L. Every time I've read my DTCs by cycling the key switch and counting the MIL flashes I get a code 12. It has puzzled me for several years. Even when the truck is running strong (as it seldom is) I read code 12 and then the 55.

I found pages and pages of threads referring to DTC 12 when read by cycling the key switch and counting the flashes of the MIL. I didn't read them all but from what I could tell, no one has posted anything conclusive about this code. In one thread, http://www.dodgedakota.net/boards/v8/2846.html, a user posting as Scott Wilder suggested that 12 indicates the beginning of DTC retrieval just as 55 means end of sequence: anything that shows up between 12 and 55 is a trouble code.

I now agree with Scott. Yesterday my Dak was running well (I'd just changed all the secondary ignition parts). I took it down to the local AutoZone to have them clear the codes the right way. Before I went I checked the codes and got 12 and 55. The manager came out to read my codes. His scanner read "NO CODES". I told him that I'd just barely read a code 12 and that my Chilton book identified this code as "power disconnect to PCM during last 50 start cycles". He laughed and said Chilton is full of BS. It turns out this guy worked at a Dodge dealership for 18 years. He said the early PCM-controlled Chryslers used code 12 to report a power disconnect. But since the late 80s or early 90s (he didn't give an exact year), code 12 has been used to signify the beginning of the code retreival sequence. So the only codes that mean anything are those that show up between 12 and 55.

Sorry this got so wordy. Can anyone verify this theory on code 12???

Don't know if this will help, but 1996 was the first model year that required OBDII emissions compliance. A generic OBDII trouble code chart I have shows 55 (or 0505 on some implementations) indicates no malfunction. The actual trouble code is P0000.
Not sure this is correct for Dodge vehicles.

Yeah, most DTC charts agree on 55. But there are several different explanations for 12: battery disconnect, EVAP circuit malfunction, start of DTC sequence, etc. Is it true that 12 was originally a PCM disconnect but later evolved into the start sequence for reading DTCs from the dash?

Agreed, the 96 is a bit of a transition model since its the last GenII but the first OBDII. But apparently GenIII owners also see code 12 a lot.
