Well, sad to say, but I sold my Dakota and bought a 2003 GMC Sierra Crew Cab Diesel. The Dakota was just too small for a family of 5 and I plan to buy a larger camper that it will not tow. Although, I loved my Dakota, I just couldn't bring myself to buy another Dodge. I just had too many problems with the Dodge to stick with the brand. If anyone else decides to make the jump, I'll see you over at dieselplace.com.

Good luck on your new truck. I've had pretty good luck with my Dak though so I'll probably get another QC someday. I do have to admit with the price of gas now diesels are looking favorable to me. What kind of MPG are you getting with your diesel?

What size tires did you have on your Dakota? I like the stance. Good luck with the new truck.

Greg, you could always swap the big block for a diesel you know(Torque is king!). I was over on Lynn's site and I didn't see any posts by IntenseDak66 over there. Have you abandoned them?
Mopower,So far I have just been driving it back & forth to work. About 8 miles with stop lights every 50 feet and I'm getting 16. I can't wait to see what I get on the highway. I've heard guys say they're getting from 20-24. Woohoo!!!
8banger, the tires on my Dak were Yokohama Geolander ATII 32X11.5 with about 1.5" lift on the suspension via torsion bars and add-a-leaf. I highly recommend those tires: quiet, cheap(relatively speaking), and they wear well.

Joe, you're comparing your half ton GMC 18 MPG (probably gasoline) to a GMC Sierra Crew Cab Diesel. Obviously he needed something like a 3/4 or 1 ton.

Apples to Oranges as far as deisels go to gasoline.

I get 18 highway with my 4X4 gas. But that's all that's expected.

The Dakota is still superior as far as so called MID SIZED trucks go.
Colorado's are of no concern if you want to compare them. Today one kept trying to romp a Colorado LS. I was able to pull him with my work van. A Chevy 3500 (1 ton) loaded with parts and tools. Funny is he kept trying a few more times. He'd pull one door length and the van would catch up and pull his Colorado 5 banger. Pretty shameful. That wouldn't happen to my Dak :)

And yesterday I saw dual outlet exhaust in a Colorado. It even had LARGE dual tips on each side. So that is a total of FOUR tips sticking out the back of a 4 or 5 banger. Funny. They sound like shlt!

the new diesels are jsut SWEET, and id take a cummins over a duramax anyway, its jsut more of a tourque monster, and gets 20 mpg
i guess the new 5 speed trannys they have for them fixed many issues

I don't think he was comparing he's 1500 to the guys 2500 or 3500 series truck. They both bought own GM truck don't you get it????

I've notice a big switch over from Dodge pick up owners to GM truck owners. And if you go over to pickuptruck.com, you can see that GM has had a big jump in sales.

And why? I think its because of fuel millage. What ever gets better gas millage these days are going to be big salers on the market.

So if you had the choice of buying a Ram or Silverado/Seirra with a standard V8 which one would you buy if you don't want to make daily stops at the pump.

Sorry Greg. Must have been a case of mistaken identity.

As far as why did I switch, fuel mileage really didn't play a part in my decision. It did in getting a diesel, but Dodge diesels actually get great mileage. Following are the reasons I switched: ball joints, tie rod ends, power steering pump, heater core, radiator, power door locks, turn signal switch, chipping paint, leaking t-case and tranny seals, wildly fluctuating oil pressure that I'm not sure I ever figured out, plenum gasket, brakes twice. All this in 3 years of ownership. I can't explain why I loved that truck, but I did. I just didn't want to go through all that again.

I jumped ship to a GMC Canyon, 25 MPG and feels like a much more solid truck then my 2000 Dak. I have no idea what GraphiteDak is talking about, the I5 is much faster then my Dak 3.9 V6.

I drove a Colorado 4x4 4 door 5 banger auto and all I can say is that it was pathetically underpowered. I had to put my foot hard into to get it to move, making the little 5 cylinder engine flair up and rev, but it still went nowhere fast. My ‘02 4.7 4x4 QC auto Dak felt like a dragster in comparison.

I would be surprised if someone could average 25 MPG in Colorado 4 door 4x4 auto that’s for sure...maybe 2 wheel drive reg cab. On the one I drove, the overhead console/computer never showed even close to that when driving.

No, I haven’t driven a new Tacoma. I wouldn’t buy one anyway (just me). I did take an honest look at the Colorado and I would have considered one if not for the motor being so under powered like I mentioned. I hated the power band. It might be ok in a lighter regular cab configuration or a 2 wheel drive. But with the 4 door 4x4 auto I just didn’t like it. To bad though cause I did really like some aspects of the Colorado. My main gripe is the motor and cheap looking interior. I can get past the interior, but not the motor. I guess my 4.7 Dak just has me spoiled.

Hmmm....just reading thru this I had to say something -

Diesel is now approaching (and in some places PASSING) the price of gas.

In CA, diesel has broken $3 a gallon.

OUCH!!

I researched and test drove all the diesels on the market.

The hands down winner in my book was the Ram 2500 CTD.

Either way, I'm getting hosed at the gas station with either truck these days.

The way I look at it is there isn’t going to be any free lunch in the gas VS diesel debate.

Sure the diesel will get better mileage and for someone that’s doing a whole lot of towing diesel is probably the way to go. But the cost of diesel fuel right now is higher than gas (in my area). Couple that with the several thousands it cost to buy a diesel engine option ($5500) as in the Cummins and you would have to drive that truck a very very long time for it to pay for itself in fuel. At least in normal everyday driving like most of us do.

Price a 4.7 powered Ram as opposed to a Cummins powered Ram and you’ll see what I mean. So if the Cummins gets say…5-7 more MPG than the gas V8, (most Cummins owners claim low 20’s) how long will it take for it to pay for the investment? That and diesels can be finicky in the winter, which is an issue to me in my area.

So to me it’s either pay now up front with a diesel and get better MPG or pay less at first and pay over time with gas. I can buy a lot of gas for $5500. It’s all in how you look at it.
Now if you could find a good used one for a decent price that may be a different story...

Dakluver -

Take that same 4.7 and try and sell it with 100K miles on it.

My "services" (oil/filter/air filter) changes are every 7500 miles.

"Life Expectancy" is around 350K miles before major overhaul.

Wanna compare thse ##'s on the 4.7 again?

You're right, initial investment might sting.

Basically, you get what you pay for.

Don't get me wrong, I think the Cummins is the best diesel on the market. And no doubt, the Cummins will have a higher resale than a gas engine and will last much longer. For someone that does a whole lot of towing it probably is worth it.

Like I mentioned you either pay now or pay later.
I think the average truck buyer barely even uses a truck for a truck let alone tow very much. Those buyers are going to have to wait a long long time to recoupe the $5500 they paid up front for the diesel, at least in the form of fuel savings.

Congrats on the new truck. I would have bought a Dodge diesel with the Cummings engine if it was me. Your new truck ought to serve you well. I have a family of 4 and can understand the comfort issue.

Best of luck,
