Subject: 87 Dakota - need part

I have an 87 Dakota V6 with a "timed" problem.

About 3 to 9 miles from starting the engine will die, sometimes several times. No "choking" or gradual stopping - it just dies. Once I get it started (and it usually starts right up) and it gets over its little "fits" it will run beautifully, without problem. And on rare occasion it doesn't die on me at all, but this doesn't happen too often.

I've looked on this and other Dodge Truck boards and it seems like the culprit is probably what Chrysler calls an "Electric Choke Resistor Control", basically a ballast resistor which mounts next to the carb. One wire in, one out, a little white ceramic box about 2" long. The center part has a number of cracks, some big. I'd like to replace this and see what happens.

The Chrysler part is 4369042, but they no longer make it and the dealer can't find in inventory anywhere. I cross-referenced this NAPA/Echlin part 2-1693, an "Electric Choke". But, like the Chrysler part, this part is not listed in NAPA inventory and also is apparently not made any longer.

Does anyone know where I could get one of these guys, do a work-around, or how to test the one I have to see if it really is the culprit?

The other possibility I came up in my research was the Hall Effects Plate. Any thoughts on this?

Thanks!

I would take that 87', wreck it, collect insurance, take the insurance money and go to the bank. Have them give you oh probably $1000 one dollar bills (old *ss daks suck and aren't worth sh*t). Take the one dollar bills home and get naked. Put all the bills in an empty bathtub. Get in the tub. Take some of the bills, roll them up, and put then in your anus. Take some other bills, wrap them around your penis and masturbate. Cum all over the bills and your face. Take a lighter, light the bills on fire while you are still in the tub, and yell "I have a rooster and his name is carlos". Repeat that about 7 times and then go to the store (preferably sav-a-lot), and buy a stuffed monkey. Take them monkey home, call it bubbles, and invite some neighbor kids over. I think you have the idea. I am sure you know what to do next. Your Welcome!

I have found the solution to my problem: it was the Hall Effects Plate in the distributor. My mechanic put on a new resistor, with no success. I also put on a new coil, with no success. But the Hall Effects Plate took care of the problem. Cheap, too. Under $30.00.

For the record (if some poor soul googles the same keywords as I originally did), the Resistor is called by Dodge the "Electric Choke Resistor Control," their part number 4379042-48750. They no longer carry this part (surprise, surprise!) Echlin also made an "electric choke" which was their part 21693 which would have worked, but it too is no longer made.

I had the same exact problem on my 88 years ago. Very hard to isolate the problem but once I figured it out, it was an easy fix. The clue for me was I was getting various error codes when I cycled the key to check for codes. I think they were 11, 15 & 52. 15 is speed sensor loss of signal and 52 is O2 stuck on rich. Specifically the 11 is what clued me in which is Intermittent loss of either camshaft or crankshaft position sensor. The Hall Effects Plate sort of acts like a CPS and when I pulled mine off, I noticed that the fins were all rusty. I swapped it with the one from a spare engine I had and the problem went away. Thing was because of the way the problem manifested itself, I kept getting intermittent and random error codes, it took me weeks to isolate the cause.
