I'll chime in. It's a big block, part of the "RB" engine family.

Look here for the details.

383 and 400 are "B" blocks.
440's are in the "RB" family

lynn, the B series were mopar first big blocks...

they are big, even though their deck height is a tad shorter than a R/B. I would never say they are a "medium" block.

they have the same deck height as a chevy 454.. so they aint medium ;-)

The 383 was one hell of a engine also! It would
eat up a set of tires in no time even on a big
boat car like the Newport.

The 273, 318, 340, 383, 440 and the tried and
true 199 and 225 slant six were by far the BEST
engines DC ever built. Even todays Hemi won't be
around as long as any of them were.

According to the AllPar info the 383 engine comes in two flavors: the B and RB blocks. It depends on the bore and stroke sizes that particular block possesses to answer 67 Newport's post. There's gotta be some way externally to identify which block he's got...

there is..

the stamp codes on B and R/B blocks are in two different locations.

67 383 would be a B motor.

the 383 R/B was not very common...

Thank you all for the information. This was really great to see the knowledge you all posess.

Its a 67 Newport Custom. A big car with 46,000 original miles. Not sure if I want to sell it or keep it at this point. I don't have the time to devote to it until next year and I hate to see it just sit there. Regardless, I appreciate everyone's replies.

Thank you.
