Subject: Gear Ratio???
IP: Logged

Message:
I have a 2003 Dodge Dakota Quad Cab with a V6? I was wondering what gear ratio I had and where I could go and find a 4.10 gear ratio. O yeah I have heard that uping the gear ratio will give me more noticable torque and might decrease my gas mileage. Is this true? Thanks in advance.

Look in the glove box, the sticker on the inside of the glove box door will tell you what ratio you have.

brandon, probably 3.55's but, look on the inside of your glove box lid. there should be a sticker with some other info and it will have gear ratio. i have thought about changing my 3.55's out in my '00 QC w/3.9 & 5spd for 3.92 or 4.10.

do some searches on here. some have mentioned no drop in mileage. i just don't have the funds right now.

I have done the swap from 3.55 to 4.10's. Gained alot more torque and my mileage actually went up a tad. Kowalski has done the swap also and his mileage also went up. We both have the 4.7, but your mileage should go up as well. The engine will not be working as hard. I bought my gears from randy's ring and pinion online. I also upgraded to the auburn limited slip. Great combo IMO. This is a very expensive mod, but it is worth it.

Android, how you like the Auburn?

My bro in law dropped a LOCKING type in his 2000 RAM (same rear end and has 4.10's) and it locks when he stomped it up dirt hills. But on the street, I heard it make a POP sound a few times when he backed up and turned, etc.

I have been thinking more of the AUBURN LSD and don't need mine so dead locked since I have a 4X4 but I'd like to hook up better than the one wheel wonder on the street :)

If you don't have the sticker like me, call a dealer and speak to someone in the service department, they can look it up based on your VIN.

The lower the gear ratio (higher numerically)means more torque, but poorer mileage as the engine is turning more revolutions. The lower the rpm the better the fuel mileage.

Tom - not always; as Android has already pointed out. We both found a slight improvement in milage, and others have too. I understand the theory behind your thinking, but take it from those who've done the swap and know firsthand - if the motor is more efficient in the new higher average rpm range, you can see an improvement.

Graphite - my truck hooks up very well with the Auburn, I think you'd be happy with it. Great traction with no annoying noise or bad cornering manners.

Kowalski, Android, I am still contemplating the 4.10 gear swap, only thing holding me back is the gas mileage thing. About 80-90% of my driving is 75-85 MPH with the engine turning about 2100-2300 RPM. Changing to 4.10's will move the RPM's up to 2400-2600 RPM while going 75-85 MPH. The higher RPM's don't scare me, I just want to make sure the engine is going to be more efficeint at the higher RPMs. Maybe 2100-2300 is the 4.7's sweet spot and moving the RPM's up to 2400-2600 will move the engine out of the sweet spot and kill my gas mileage???

Question time... what are your RPM's while cruising on the hwy/frwy, what's your speed cruising on the hwy/frwy, how much of your driving is done on the open road and did you see a MPG improvement in both city and hwy driving?

I am really looking into the gears, but don't want to dump this type of money into a mod and make the truck's gas mileage worse.

At 80 mph, i am turning what looks to be exactly 2400 rpm's. My truck is a heavy 4x4 with an auto. I run 265/70r16 tires. My truck is also a 2003 with a .67 overdrive ratio. Is your truck manual or auto? I think with the manual the tranny has a higher overdrive ratio, usually around mid .7 something.

The nice thing about the 4.10's is that I can maintain speed and accelerate while in o/d while going up steep hills. Before my truck would downshift to 4th when trying to accelerate up hill.

Sounds like our trucks are pretty close, I have a 03 QC 2wd 4.7 auto, think my tires are 265/65R16's. Maintinaing speed while going up hills was one reason for the gears, seemed that my old 00 CC's 45RFE (same truck less 2 doors)would maintain speed better than the 03 QC's 545RFE. Funny thing, the 00 CC would be pushing 2400-2500RPM while going 80-85 and get better mileage than the QC turning 2100-2300 RPM,,, Maybe I just answered my own question... DOH

How's your mileage on the freeway doing 80 MPH? The best my 00 CC ever got was 20 MPG, averaged about 18-19 MPG on the freeway. The 03 QC gets about 17-18 MPG.

I think I need a set of gears and cams...

Check the sticker on the inside of your glovebox lid. You should have the gear ratio on that sticker.
