Subject: Clutch Problem
IP: Logged

Message:
I have a 1995 Dakota Pickup with 4 cylinder engine and 5 speed manual tranny. I had not used it for 6 weeks and had no problems when I left it. When I started it, the truck moving in gear with the clutch engaged. I turned off the engine and restarted in neutral, but cannot put it in gear. The clutch feels about the same and worked fine before, but now seems to have failed while just sitting there. Any advise from anyone would be appreciated, as to the cause of this or what to do. Thanks in adance.

Sæll!
Your problem is that the clutch driven plate is „frozen“to the flywheel; which isn´t unknown problem here in Iceland. What really has happened is that the flywheel has formed rust and the plate is stuck. The solution is very simple. Start the truck in gear, preferably 2nd or 3rd if possible, and drive, with the clutch pedal depressed, like maniac bottoming either the gas or the brakes, preferably uphill, and in few minutes the clutch will release. Just make sure not to hurt anybody and maybe the police might want to know why you are driving so erratically so stay out of their way.
Happy ending!

Sounds kind of scary but I'll give it a try. My problem will be getting it out of the driveway without crashing into trees across the road. Any other alternatives? Thanks.

Well, I tried it. I started it in third gear, raced out the drive, took a hard turn on the road and up the hill with my hand on the key ready to shut down if needed. Then it happened...It by god worked! Thanks to you I won't get ripped off my some mechanic wanting to replace everything. It was also an exciting ride but no one got hurt. Thanks again.
