I have a problem with the engine stumbling at 2400 rpm and it some times backfiring. There are no problem codes, the dealer says they can find nothing wrong, but the problem is still there. Can anyone tell me what might be wrong.

Thanks

Does it happen under acceleration, coasting or deceleration? I don't know what it could be, but it almost sounds like something to do with either the ignition (intermittently bad spark plug wire) or fuel. Have you tried some dry gas and did the dealer check the fuel pressure under a variety of loads. Another option you have is to go to another dealer for a second opinion. Not all dealer service departments are created equal ;-)

It happens under gradual acceleration, and always does the same thing. It is as though the fuel or ignition is shut off for half a second and then turned back on when it gains more rpm. I had a similiar problem when I first got my Eagle Talon and when the spark plugs were changed they put the ones with the wrong gap in and it caused a flat spot in the power cure.

Let's get this problem solved.

UPDATE

Got the truck back from the second dealer that I have taken it too. They spent most of the day trying to solve the hesitation problem at 2400 rpm on gradual excelleration. NO LUCK. They even took one of the 2001 V6 5 Spd on the lot for a drive, guess what .......... does the same dam thing. I would like to heat from anyone that owns a V6 5 Speed to see if they can get there truck to do the same thing. If you can take it to the dealer and complain and get them to report it to Chrysler. The more they hear about this problem the sooner it can be fixed. See my next post explaining how to test for this condition.

I know this post is a little old, but I have been having the same problem for around 2 years now. The dealer has verified it, but has no solution. Did you ever figure out what the cause is?

Think I know the the problem but it doesn't explain the one on the lot doing the same thing however.Have them conduct a compresion test on all cylinders, sounds to me like one of the intake vlv's is not seating or is bent and not seating. This is usually the cause of what you describe.Intake gases being pushed out during exhaust stroke into the hot manifold/header cause the backfire in ur cat or just b-for it.

Still no fix for the problem. Have been to four different dealers, all say there is a problem, and none know what to do to fix itand it is getting worse. Now it has started pinging under load, sounds like a diesel going up hill there is so much valve rattle.

Well I would check 3 things for sure. Had something similar happened to a ford p/u I had one time.
1. Distibutor cap, check it for cracks. if it has a crack across it in side the arc will chase it and cause a stumble miss fire on another cylinder or two. This crack will be fine as a hair look close. It will sometimes blacken around the edges of the crack.
2. Starting to ping says its getting really warm, check for excess water drip in exhaust or exhaust gas in the cooling system. Could have a blown head gasket, or a semi-stopped up radiator. Run a compression check for sure.
3. Try using a premium fuel 93 octane for a couple tanks and see if it stops pinging and stuttering.

I hope this helps solve or eliminate some of the possible problems.

Nuckenfuts has a good idea about the compression. I had a 1980 Chevy Malibu years back that had the same symptoms you described. Took it to a local garage and the first thing they did was check the compression. I was running on 5, not 6 cylinders with one at lower compression (more like 4.5 cyliners). hope this helps.

Bent valve. Most definitely. I didn't know it was pinging under load. Not taht big of a deal to fix, proly 2-3 days at the shop depending on there work load. They more than likely will send the head out to be shaved and all the vlvs. to be re-seated cause the seat with bent vlv. will need to be ground anyway so most of the time they go ahead and re-seat them all while the head is off the only new parts u need are a new vlv. and a retainer.Bring it back to the dealer and don't let them bullsh1t u, tell them u brought it to a friend who is a mechanic and he told u that compression was bad in one or more cylindrs and that it's proly due to a bent vlv(s)..
