Subject: Buying a Dakota, Which is the fastest?

Message:
After looking at Gen2 4.7's and 5.9 R/T's I can't quite figure out which might be faster. So I'm asking you peeps in order to help me make up my mind. I'm looking for a Dakota, Club cab, 4X2, probably a SLT model (to get the luxury goodies). I'm going to mod the hell out of it, but I want to know which to start out with in order to get the best bang for my buck. It would also help to get some Track times from some of you 5.9 and 4.7 folks.

Check the performance board -- 4.7 vs 5.9 post, just to name one. All kinds of remarks, comments, fights, feuds, etc etc based on that topic.

No sense in rehashing it all again in this post!
hehehe

Good luck

If Gas is not a issue this is how i would put it.

If you want a Auto Tranny the 5.9 in the R/T or just Plain Quad cab is faster then the 4.7 auto.

If you want the 5 speed you can only get the 4.7. The 4.7 5 speed with 3.92 rear end is the fastest stock dakota right now.

I really love my 5.9 it just has been such a great engine that seems to get better as it ages. Plus the R/T looks awsome.

If you going to "Mod the hell out of it" get the 5.9L. There are many many more parts for it than the 4.7L (for the time being)

The 4.7 is a better engine from the factory. But the 5.9 has a lot more potential horsepower from the mods. If you are going to leave it stock, I would go with the 4.7 5-speed. If you are going to do a lot of mods, get the 5.9, you will be happier.

I disagree the 4.7 5-speed combo is the fastest. I think they are about dead even. The fastest CC time for stock truck was Duner's and it was in the 14's. I haven't seen any claims form 4.7 CC running stock in the 14's. The RC 4.7 seem to run 14.7-14.9 if driven just right, but lots of RC stock R/T's seem to be able to muster those kind of times. You will have more money left over if you get a 4.7, but if you truly want a ton of mods it seems an easy choice to get an R/T. You could find a used R/T easier then a 2wd 4.7/3.93LS/5-speed combo.

If you are going to mod the hell out of it, the 5.9 is your only reasonable choice. The 4.7 has 3 timing chains to contend with. Any performance parts are not tried and true. And those you do find are going to cost $$$. The R/T with the 5.9 will be an R/T at tradein- means it's gonna be worth more. The 4.7 is going to be a Dakota- nothing special. There is an abundance of tested performance parts for the 5.9. And anybody that has raced cars knows- there ain't nothin' that beats the bigger cubes. And besides, the women think that the R/T is sexy, A 4.7 is just a truck.

Flash, LOL good point about the whole sexy women thing. Thanks for the input guys, looks like this is going to be something I'm going to plan out. I figure I'll plan out my mods, price them up, find some numbers, and see what I can come up with. Theres also a chance that I might swap the engine out for a high performance mopar engine, but like I said its all in the works. (Although expensive, my crazy, but do-able scheme will crank out roughly 340 horse, but I need to talk to my speed shop associate). Thanks for the input though!

If you want 340 hp or more. Get the 5.9 when you get it take the motor out sell it either to the dealer of privatly and but a 360 crate from mopar making 340 or more. Or just make the stock 360 make 340 hp. You will need to change the pistons and cam and get better heads but it could be done.

"And besides, the women think that the R/T is
sexy, A 4.7 is just a truck" come on Flash. If
someone is going to mod the hell out of their
truck as Mr. Sleepy seems to be inclined to do
a full suspension (Hotchkis or the like)and
some "real" wheels (Kenessis, BBS, HRE)
are sure to be high on the to do list. Ad factory
flares and remove stickers and whats the
difference. Oh ya, the 4.7 5-speed is lower,
lighter and faster and with the 5-speed much
more fun to drive. Ok flame away...

P.S. Despite the excessive weight I must
admit the R/T wheels are the coolest factory
wheels of any truck.

P.P.S. The truth be told the 4.7 seems to be
very performance mod. unfrendly. If you drop
the $2000.00 for the standard stage 3 mods
(cold air, cat-back, cat-foward, chip, ignition,
throttle body, plugs, and 180t) your true gains
are much lower than a stage 3 on an R/T.

If you wanted the crate motor I'd get a used 5.2 Dakota with 100,000 miles on it and just dump the 5.2 and all the factory computer/FI system. The crate motor do really well with just a good old 4-bbl or holley projection if you really can't tune a carb. I'd go with a non-lockup 3 speed torqueflight to keep things simple if it was mainly for drags and gas mileage didn't matter. I bet you could find a clean high mileage 97 5.2 with high mileage for around $10000. $5000 would have the drive train up and running. This kind of setup in a Duster will run low 13's.
