Compressor will engage in any defrost mode. It's normal.
Any position of the selector that directs air to the inside of the windshield is a "defrost mode", and the compressor will engage to direct cool, dry air to the windshield.

if it just stay on while in a/c mode with no type of "cycle" to it ..... you might have a bad pressure switch or low freon......

I think alot of the old school folks call the refrigerant freon. And low r134 doesn't always mean "not work at all" - depends on how low it is and if it's enough for the low pressure switch. And he never said what year it was, he might still have freon and not been converted to r134 yet.

If it is low, check for leaks.
