All, I am interested in purchasing a 2000 Dakota. The truck has 72000 miles on it. It is an extended cab, 4x2 with an automatic trans and 4.7L V8. The truck has a couple of things wrong with it that I am hoping someone can shed some light on. The dealer says he will fix the problems but he is kinda far for me travel to and from for repairs. What I am hoping is that I can get enough information so I can get some more money off the price and just do the repairs myself.
The first problem is with the drivers seat. It is a power seat. It rocks back and forth (like a rocking chair). It appears that the seat adjuster has alot of play in it. Has anyone else had this problem? Cost to repair?
The second problem is with the drivers side power window. When you put the window down, as it approaches the bottom it vibrates badly. The entire door actually shakes. Regulator?
Third I think is the ball joint problem. Does anyone know if the extended warranty on these is extended to a second owner?
Thanks,
Tony_V

loose driver's seat

My 2000 Quad Cab has a loose driver side power seat also. You can shake it by hand or 'rock' while sitting in it. It's been like that since new, and the dealer said there is nothing wrong with it, 'they're all like that' was his comment. It's annoying but I am used to it now. It hasn't got any worse, it appears to be poor manufacturing tolerances on the power adjustment mechanism. Maybe you can find a tighter one in a bone yard and replace it yourself?

To answer your question Tony_V yes the ball joint extended warranty will work for anyone just as long as it has not been done yet and the dealer thinks that it needs to be done, also i have a manual seat that does the same rocking thing in my 2000 q/c thought it was loose and tried to tighten it, but found it to be already tight so when i took it to the dealer, they told me that, there was no problem and sent me on my way

Sounds like your buying the same truck I totalled 6 months ago, well not the exact same truck. I bought it in 02 with 66K on it and the only problems I had were the upper ball joints and front brakes, loved the truck besides these two things.

Look and see if the upper balljoints are riveted in, if they are, they are the stock units and should be replaced for free by Dodge. If the upper ball joints are bolted in they have been replaced before, no free ball joints.

The window problem sounds like the regulator,,, don't know about the front seat.

Try to beat the dealer up on the price and fix it yourself,,, just don't let the dealer know your going to fix it yourself. If the dealer fixes the truck they will do it as cheaply as possible, more money for them :-(

Both my 00 and 03 used Dak's had problems that the dealer said they would fix. I had them drop the price instead so I knew problems were fixed correctly and more money for ME ;-)

Thanks for the responses.
DSW, that's good info about the ball joints. I forgot that once they are replaced they're bolted in. And I believe I am going to do exactly what you did; get the price lower and fix it myself.

John / KJS, I can't believe the dealer said the seats were normal. I have to say that is what is wrong with big 3, not the cars or the manufacturing, just the dealers.

I went to a Memorial Day picnic yesterday and one of the guests pulled up in a '00 quad cab. I asked him all sorts of questions and he had nothing but good things to say about his truck.

Again, thanks to all for the responses. I will be heading to the dealer in a few hours to try and secure a deal.

Tony

My 99 dakota has the same vibrating problem with the driver's side window. I don't think it's the regulator, though. Whenever it is rainy outside, the window does not vibrate. That gave me the idea to take off the inner door panel and spray some grease into the glass tracks. The problem was gone! But two days later it came back. I'm disinclined to disassemble my door every few days to address this.
Then again if it is the regulator, that might explain why the problem is recurrent. I just thought I'd throw in what I've tried and experienced.

I purchased the truck. The dealer went down another $500 not to have to fix the problems. I will fix the window but the seat I may not. It needs shocks and the ball joints are original. I think they will need replacing soon.
