Subject: 4.7 vs.5.2

After a 192,000 mile romp with my 93 Ranger 4.0 (and rolling it on the freeway) i've decided to go Mopar and look for a Dakota. Im just stuck between getting a 00-01 4.7 or staying with the tried and trusted 5.2 in 97-99 Dakotas. My questions are: Has the 4.7 proven itself to be as durable as the old 318? Does that multi second gear trans in the 4.7 really make a difference? Whats the gas mileage difference? And is it true 4.7's like to go through head gaskets every 40-50k miles? Any responces will be greatly appreciated. I want to make the right decision here and not make a mistake ill regret.

I've a 2k 4.7 QC 4x4 with about 70k miles

No issues with the engine at all. Has ample power, gas mileage is acceptable. I just pray I never have to change the spark plugs because I still haven't a clue where the little buggers are hidden!

I have a 4.7 in my 03 and I like it. I havent heard no real prob with the 4.7. only prob I heard was if you dont change your oil on a reg basis they build sluge up bad. but mine I have yet to have any major probs. you have to ask yourself you want a truck with very high milage or to get a truck with lower milage. I never heard anything about going through head gaskets at 40,000 to 50,000 miles. it comes down to how well yo utreat the engine. if yo udog the motor all the time. any motor will give out sooner. compared to a motor treated right. it comes down to your choice of what yo uwant. test drive both and see what yo ulike better.

2000 4.7 with 60,000 miles, no significant problems, just a valve tick since 20,000.
plugs are hidden under the coils about 6 inches deep........install carefully.

Uh oh. I expected a WAR to start in here with the 4.7/5.2 thing again LOL!

I've got a 4.7 and am happy with it.
However, it hasn't REALLY been around long enough to actually JUDGE weather it will hold up like the 318 did.

on a side note, my bro in law has a 5.2 2 door Ram. He wants a 4 door Dodge now and may go Dakota. He said he kind of WANTS a 4.7 because he thinks mine performs WELL for what it is, romping/towing, etc.

I had a '98 Dakota 4X4 with a 5.2 and now have an '04 Dakota 4X4 with a 4.7, both with 3.55 gears, and both bought new. I think the old 318 had just a little bit more grunt off the line than the 4.7. However, the 4.7 is smoother, revs quicker and gets about 2 mpg better (highway) than my 5.2. I haven't had any problems with the 4.7 yet (only 6800 miles), but the 318 had a bad lifter that had to be replaced at 900 miles. My 4.7 does get the "milkshake" froth when it gets below freezing, but so far this has not been a problem.

The newer 5 speed auto shifts smoother between the 1-2 shifts than the 4 speed auto in the '98. Also, the 4 speed auto in my '98 was easy to confuse, and would often do a 2-3-2 shift. I tried adjusting the TV cable, but couldn't eliminate the problem.

Overall, I'd say that the 4.7 and 545RFE are a smoother, more refined, efficient combination than the 5.2 and the 4 speed auto.
