I've got a 2001 Dakota 4.7L. Lately I've been having a strange brake problem. After driving in stop and go traffic the brakes will NOT release-smoke boils out of wheel wells, rotors are redhot, etc. Put it in the shop, had master cylinder replaced. This fixed the problem for about 2 & 1/2 months. Now it's happening again. Took it back to same shop, now they say the calipers need replacing. I don't think they have a clue what's wrong, just replacing parts until problem is fixed. Any ideas what the problem might be here?? I don't visit the board often, so if this has already been discussed, my apoligies.
Thanks !!

Look back with a search for this. I had the same problem with my front brakes on a trip to FL at about 20k and made a couple of posts. the dealer (a good/honest one) said that we need factory pads (not even v-line) or we are suseptable to this problem, because the heat is not carried away efficiently with anything but. BTW, if you smoked, then the caliper seals, hoses and pads are ng. There is a good chance that the rotors are junk too depending on how badly you smoked. When they did mine under warranty they also repacked the wheel bearings. The "pad" theory sounds a bit strange to me, but as of now I don't know because I have not had the problem again and everything was replaced with factory.

Either the calipers are seizing, or the flex hoses in front have collapsed and won't release pressure. If they got hot enough to smoke, you need new rotors, calipers, pads, hoses and a full fluid change. That much heat will destroy the fluid.

Check the caliper slide pins and make sure they are lubed, if they are dry the caliper could lock in position when the brakes are applied. I found this problem on my buddies truck after he did a brake job,,, the front brakes started smoking after the truck had been driven for 10-20 miles, about 20% of the time.

Check the brake pad slides on the calipers also, if they are gouged real bad the pads could lock in position. My 00 calipers had some real bad gouges on the slides, hit them with some sand paper to smooth them out and greased the slides, though I should have replaced the calipers. The gouges on the caliper pad slides would cause an annoying clicking noise in stop-n-go traffic.
