I seem to agree with 97SLT318,

My 96 Dakota SLT had a 318 with a auto.. I it just didn't have as much grunt below 2500 revs that I would have liked.. Of course the 2.73:1 from the 42RE frist gear might have something to do with that..

The tranny hooked up the 287 was a 3.00 1st gear..

Now speaking for trannies, My Sierra 4L60E has a 3.06 cog. And even has more lowend grunt than my older 318 Dakota/

jayb, If I remember correctly it puts out 310 hp @ 5100 RPM and 345 ft/lb torque @ 4000 RPM. Those are peak #'s. The power band picks up at a much lower RPM and holds pretty steady before it starts to drop off after peak. My Dakota 4.7 seemd to only have a usable poweer band in the upper RPM range.

Seems like those vortech engines are a bit toruqe challanged. But so is that car engine dodge uses in its trucks called the Hemi.

Ohhh, that really makes me want to run out and buy a GMC. What kind of horseshi+ are you doing to send a message on a DODGE message board that says you bought a GMC? Big deal and whoppy di do for you.

We have nothing against GM or Ford, but some us believe in Dodge -- maybe its purely personal preference, but that's how it is. Just like some people supported John Kerry others BUSH. I wouldn't be so stupid as to run into a Kerry conevntion and start yelling "I'm voting for Bush." So good for you and now go join the GM board.
