how often do you change your synthetic oil and what brand oil and filter do you use? what kind of driving conditions?
when i had my oil changed i switched to mobil 1 10w-30 and a fram filter. they said i'm good for 7,500 miles. i changed it myself this time after 6,000 miles and it was pretty dam dark. i drive in NJ 1/3 highway 2/3 main routes at about 50mph with a few lights. i put a k&n filter on this time an will change the oil when it looks half as dark as it was. i am hoping this filter gets me more life out of my oil. it filters down to 10-20 microns vs 30-40 a fram gets.

I use Mobil 1 oil and Mobil 1 oil filters. I don't touch those Fram filters.
I change the oil at 10k and the filter at 5k.
Mixed highway/city 17 miles one way to work. Five days a week. It's a 99 with 85k on it.

I use mobil one 10-30 and mobil oils best filter > and I change every 5,000 give or take a few > 6 month changes really > if your planing on changing when your oil is half black better get the oil and filter now > your not going to go a bunch before it happens > mine is black in 1k and been that way sence the day it was new > and untill last year i changed every 3k >

I use pureolator filters on my dakota and my wife's grand am. I still change my oil every 3000-4000 miles. I do alot of stop-and-go driving here in the Atlanta area. Little added protection never hurts.

I run Mobil 1 5-w-30 and Motorcraft FL-1A. Change
every 3,000 miles or less depending on conditions.
The FL-1A is a Purolator Pure One filter for about half
the price.
Anyone want to start a pool as to when (not if) Amsoil
Sponsor will chime in with some Amsoil drivel?

I run Amsoil 5w-30 and an Amsoil filter in both my daily driver and my 03 CC 3.9 auto Dak. Daily driver goes about 8k miles annually; Dak goes about 3k miles annually. I change filters and top off at 6 months; I change oil and filters annually. Used Oil Analysis shows oil to be "suitable for continued use" even at the one year mark.
I have read on this forum that oil color may not be the best way to judge how your oil is holding up, but an oil analysis costs about as much as an oil change.

Probably as soon as someone asks a question that he can thoroughly answer...I got no problem with him posting about Amsoil. I know I've learned quite a bit from him that I'd never read before. I'd love to switch to Amsoil but I just don't have the money currently and if I placed an order I'd buy enough for at least 3 or 4 oil changes to make sure I saved quite a bit.

Even the amsoil guy says the walmart super tech is a good oil filter 20 microns. Built by the same guys who make the mobil 1 filter. Just not great for extended changes, but mine calls for a st16,and the st8a is the same thing just a longer filter so that might go longer in between changes

I always use Mobil 1 oil and filter, and change it every 3 to 4 k miles.
Just on the last change, i switched to Amsoil 2000 0w30 and Amsoil filter.
They are advertized for 20 + k miles. I all ready drove 6k miles and it still on the top mark on the stick.
I`m trying to have the patience to wait at least 10 k miles and than, have the oil analyzed and , probably go back to 5w30 weight.
I made my membership w\ Amsoil, and this way, it costs just as much as M1.
To take advantage of the shiping cost, i buy at the same time 2 oil changes, 2 filters, differencial oil, 10w40 for my 1200cc Suzuki, chain lube, a case of compressor oil, etc.
I`m very excited about Amsoil and the price is very competitive w\ its "niche".

Royal purple change every 10K, K&N filter, remove the filter at 5K, Hey, DAN M, you don;t drain the oil to remove the filter... you just pull off the old filter and install a new one... then top off the oil. I usually check the oil level with the engine running, so I use about 5.5 qts in my 5.9

richard here are my oil analysis results using Amsoil. I could probably make it to 12k, maybe 15k. Notice how it thickens to a forty weight though(still very good wear #s ). At 15k it would probably be approaching a fifty weight. I am using German Castrol 0-30 now which should stay in grade better. Good luck, and post your analysis results please!!

To clarify: I change the oil and filter, drive 5k and then change only the filter, then 5k more and drain oil and change filter again. I do this because I am afraid the filter may become clogged and then simply bypass and allow unfiltered oil. The oil stays very clean between intervals and I think I can extend the drain interval even farther but I doubt that I will do that.

The oil is dark because of soot in the oil which is harmless. If your using Mobil 1 then you can go to 10k miles easy, especially since Mobil 1 has come out with 15k mile oil. Thats provided you engine is in good running condition.
Personally, after seeing so many oil analysis reports, I no longer spend over $1.00 for a quart of oil and $2.50 for a filter (always stock up on sales). Recently I ran my 94 dakota with over 100k miles to 5000 miles on Penzoil and had a sample tested. Wear numbers were very low, in fact, most synthetic analysis reports I've read weren't as good.
If your going to pay for synthetic, beware many oils labeled synthetic are really group III type oils and aren't truely snthetic, while Mobil 1 and Amsoil is at least group IV (true synthetic. Since your paying for synthetic make sure thats what your getting.
