I have a 99 5.2L Dakota. It frequently dies on me if I am parked or driving, doesnt sputter out or anything just quits running and it only seems to do it when it's about 65 degrees or warmer outside and the engine is warmed up. If I shut it off for 2-15 min. after it dies it starts right back up. I,ve had the the fuel pressure checked, Ive replaced the cam position sensor, crank sensor, throttle posistion sensor, spark plugs/wires, cap and rotor and also the catalytic converter. I'm thinking it's probably the PCM (powertrain control module) but wanted to see if anyone else has had this problem and knows what it is before I spend $500 on a new PCM. And yes, I took it to dodge but it didnt die on them but they thought it was because the throttle body needed to be cleaned so that cost me $480 only to have it die 1500 feet from the dealership after I left. Thanks for any help.

Welcome to the club. Mine is a 93 and spent the last 6 months fighting same problem. Everyone will tell you the computer seldom goes however I think it was my problem and after a couple of weeks more will finally start to feel comfortable. Mine never stalled below zero but got progressively worse as time went on. Turn the ignition switch to start (not run) position to see what lights up on dash when it won't start and your sitting there blocking traffic. Until the check engine light comes on during pre start up tests it would never fire. Also OD light would not come on. Finally got FSM and traced wires to dash and found check engine and OD were fed by PCM. Purchased a used one from www.car-parts.com for $85 and looks like finally got it. Did a quick check on yours and without knowing 4x4 or 4x2 and manual or tranny just did a search for "99 Elec Cont Unit (ECU), (right fender), 8-318 (5.2L), AT, 4X4, std emis (Fed)" and there were several for $75. Check shipping prices first though to see what the total is, mine was only $5. Got to the point where I didn't want to be a sitting target and after replacing the PCM ran $50 worth of gas sitting in the driveway to test it first. Been driving a week now and looks like it fixed it. Because they do have a low failure rate I feel comfortable with a used one. I'm upgrading the 3.9 to a 5.2 soon or would have purchased the Mopar one at Summit, another option for you too maybe if you don't mind the octane requirements.

Just remembered that I ran across several people on the net where the battery caused this. Even though lights and everything else worked fine the computer needs a good shot of juice all the time. If yours is stock from 99 I would replace it anyhow. Can have it checked at most auto parts stores for free I think.

Keep a can of carb cleaner or canned air (something that shoots out cold) in the truck. Next time it dies hose down the PCM and try to start the truck immediately. If cooling down the PCM makes it start you have found your problem. I've used this trick a couple of times to find flakes electronic modules.

I agree with MMIKE, try to get a used one and check those battery cables,,, ground wires too.

Mine has been doing this too. Did you get any codes? Its definatley a elc.power loss like the asd. relay shutting down. I'ved cleaned the connection to the pcm. Thought it helped but no. Same thing happened again. Did get a code 12. So I cleaned connections on battery and changed the battery. Cleaned the asd.relay connections. No good, same thing. Finnaly I pull the cover off of the computer. Plug the wire plug back in the computer. Besides some big heat sinks at the top you're looking at yellow colored rubber with three things sticking out. Two look like condensers one blue one green. One is a wavery metal looks like a small heat sink. Well when the truck wont start I can wiggle any of the three with the key in the on position and wa-la it comes to life. Mine has gotten better in time so now it only dies for a second or two at highway speeds. Its either replace the computer or some how repair this .Which does NOT look easy , But if I have to buy a new computer any way . Why not TRY
I would suggest see if there are any codes. Check battery and connections, check asd connections and asd. relay , next time it does this leave the key on and wiggle the computer, If it comes to life you will hear it under the hood and the engine light will come on. If this happens you have my same problem . You can take it to the dealer and wiggle the computer and show them whats wrong
