Damn computers.
I went to leave in my truck today and my pc based stereo system would keep resetting. Found the CPU cooling fan BAD.
Well. I can NOT drive with no music. So I grabbed the CPU cooling fan off of THIS computer in my home.
Sure enough. That one intergrated in my truck worked again. went to Fry's electronics and got a new one for $15
Came home. Put the one I stole BACK on this one.
NO GO! Somehow as I was trying to PRY that HUGE Thermaltake CPU fan off I broke something or just simply because I didn't clean off the bottom of the heat sink and re apply new paste.
So it was cooked.

So... then BACK to Fry's Electronics to buy a new motherboard/CPU set.
Had one on sale so I bought it. One of those new AMD 64 bit motherboards, CPU, FAN, and memory.

Wanted to CHEAt as always and just boot up with my existing Windows XP PRO installation. No GO! It would just glitch and restart.
Had to re install fresh. Now I've got to rape out my files form the hard drive and back them up on DVD disks and slowly add all my programs.

Anyway. It's been a fun day. All I needed was a $15 CPU fan for my Dakota and I couldn't wait, so this computer suffered!

Funny thing tho. my wife was giving me hell about the trucks stereo system. Saying I should have just left in the stereo I had. But as I told her. When a stereo breaks, you're out over $300 no matter what. A computer version you only replace what broke. In this case a $15 CPU fan, which by the way was NOT new when I built the system in my Dak late last year. I used a fan I already had :P

Now I've got to gracefully back my stuff up right. I've got my website with all those Dakota pics of mods and what not. I don't want to mess that stuff up.

I bet u had a non 64 bit Processor in the PC before you replaced it. That was your problem...you can't swap in a 64 bit Motherboard/processor into a non 64 Bit system/OS. The OS (Windows XP) is installed with tweaks for your current processor (HAL Hardware Abstraction Layer) so when you replaced it with a 64 bit one you killed the system. Because you can't recompile the kernel for your new Processor like you can in Linux. I know your all up and running now but just in case it happens again be sure to replace the processor with a simular one next time.

Honestly it doesn't matter what type of CPU you had before, if it's a different mobo you'd likely need to reinstall windows anyway. The mobo components are all different and require different windows drivers. In some cases you can drop in a new mobo and it'll install the new drivers and run, but your windows is still clogged with all of the no longer needed drivers.

As far as backing up on DVD, here's what I do instead. I partition my hard drive into two partitions. About 12GB for windows and the normal windows required apps, and the rest for everything else. Music, video's, documents, everything else. That was when windows needs reinstalled (which even with XP about every year or so is a good idea) I just format the C drive and install windows. That way everything on the other partition is there, doesn't need backed up (though a semi-frequent backup is always a good idea), and you're back up and running MUCH quicker. Just my $.02.

always need to clean and apply fresh thermal paste/grease when you take the sink off.

and where did you see on the mobo box that it was 'plug and play' itself?
lol.

I KNOW what you are SUPPOSED to do. Everyone I know ALWAYS formats their drive.

But when you lose your system without warning, I like to recover my data.
After it wouldn't boot up with the existing installation on the HD when I stuck in the new MB and CPU, I simply renamed the windows dir and installed FRESH but left everything in tact so I could get it.

Obviously I had it up and running before i posted last night :)

As far as partitioning a drive. I used to do that all the time. Haven't in a while tho. And I've got 100 gigs of videos I still needed to get off so I didn't have much room.

The regular XP Pro is working fine right now. I need to buy (borrow) XP 64 bit soon so it will take advantage of this processor.

you can boot from the cd and just install right over the top of the old dir, that way it changes what it needs to but all your programs dont need to be reinstalled (all the dlls are still in the system32 dir, etc)

using teh same o/s that is. the xp64 should get a fresh install.

(figured out yet what i do for a living?)
haha

Partitioning the drive is a waste of time...when the hard drive fails you will lose EVERYTHING. Just make frequent back-ups.

This is exactly why I use Macs. Not to be a smart a s s, but I just don't have these problems anymore. Period. No, really. I've used PCs since 1984 and I've had enough of dealing with the issues. Good luck to you.

Macs are fine if you ain't into gaming...or programming (i think)...

Kickass for webdesign/graphic design so I've heard...never used em myself. Out of my price range for something equal to what I currently got.

I'm sticking to PCs...cheap and easy to build/maintain...and as much as I hate it, it's still compatible with most stuff out there.

I'm working on learning to use Linux too since it's considerably more stable and secure than Windows...plus it's freeeeee. Just put a 20gb harddrive into this machine and installed Mandrake Linux 10.1 on it.

Oh...and a stupid mac joke I heard.

Kid #1: "Name one thing a PC can do that a Mac can't!"
Kid #2: "Right-click."

You are right Jeff.

I never bothered to READ up on the 64 bit stuff.

I first tried to lay XP right over my existing install which I've done before on many computers.

Just that the diff MB it couldn't be done this time. Booting from Cd is what I did.

So... now I've had to re install programs little by little. The ones that need to be in the registry. some just run from their directory and work fine.

I'll need to back up more often too :p

Oh. This failure had NOTHING to do with it being a PC vs a MAC.

It BROKE because I pulled the fan/heat sink and threw it back on without cleaning and re applying paste (which I HAVE)

It was one of those heat sinks with the GRAY goo instead of heat sink paste. I think it didn;t seat on the CPU properly when I put it back and it got NUKED!

Now what I think of a MAC vs. a PC is like the pro BETA guys thought of VHS.

they ALL swore it was superior. But it wasn't supported by the majority.

As far as support for most home computers go, MAC will NEVER catch up.

And what's with the Quick Time players?
That sh*t was written my NAZI's!

You go to a web site and download the plug in, etc and it ALWAYS puts itself in you START UP and SYSTEM TRAY without your permission.

I ALWAYS have to remove it form my start up config!

Speaking of Quicktime...that's the only drawback to my digital camera...the video feature records in Quicktime. So then I had to download & crack a program so i could convert the damn thing to .wmv (waaaaaaay smaller filesize) and edit it.

And yeah...I also hate it for the reasons you mentioned Graphite. It's not super difficult to get rid of it from popping up everywhere...just annoying.
