I am having trouble with my dealer concerning valvetrain noise in my '96 3.9. I need an answer from someone, anyone. Is it normal to have valvetrain noise from a 3.9 V-6? I keep being told that some lifter noise is normal. My truck didn't make any when I bought it, and I've test drove a 98 3.9 and it didn't make any noise other than the injectors firing. Please help!!!!!

With some higher mileage engines, you may hear some lifter "tick". But...they also may be "sticky". You can try one of two things:
(1) "Lifter Quiet" Oil Additive
(2) Marvel Mystery Oil
(3) 1-Qt ATF in the oil about 20 miles before your next oil change (drain 1qt before you add the ATF).
Don't laugh...ATF lubricates (somewhat) but has a high detergent content which helps remove gum and varnish from the lifters and valvetrain. Do NOT use that Kerosene Crap that you pour in your crankcase before an oil change. It doesn't lubricate, breaks down the oil very quickly, and may cause old caked-up and burnt oil to fall into the oil passages causing more problems than it's worth. (This is that Internal Engine Cleaner that you pour into the crankcase to "clean" the internals.)

My '96 3.9 has some valve train noise, and I've also been told that it's normal. It only does it after the truck has warmed up for a few minutes. It didn't do it when I bought it (23,000 miles), but has gotten worse since then. I now have just under 48,000 miles. I've just been listening for it to get worse, but I may try MM Oil. My dad swore by it.
