I am getting better fuel economy since switching over to the ...
AMSOIL 5W-30 SYNTHETIC OIL.

3 MORE MILES PER GALLON ON A 2001 DAKOTA V-6 ...... WOW !

I thought that most of the stuff that I read here about the
product was hype.

IT WAS NOT !

Last month I switched to Amsoil in my differentials, transfer case, motor oil, and power steering pump. I have an 03 4x4 QC with the 4.7L and 5 speed auto.

To be completely honest I didn't notice any fuel mileage increase, and I looked. Around here (NC) the weather got warmer the same time I did the switch so I saw about 1mpg better averages. I though wow, Amsoil made a little differencee. Then I looked at my fuel mileage log and a year ago at this same time I saw about the same increase. Warmer weather, better MPG>

Sooo.. While I do not regret going to amsoil, I cannot in good faith tell anyone that it made a noticable difference in fuel mileage either. I had put it in the power steering system hoping that the annoying whine would decrease, but it didn't help that, but I still blame DC for that one. :) But, because synth is better overall, so "they" say anyway, I will likely continue to use it. After all, MPG wasn't the only reason I switched, just something I was hoping for as a bonus.

While I find it excessively hard to believe you got a 3mpg increase in fuel efficency simply changing oil (unless your oil was 3 year old :) ) I still say good for you because hey, any MPG nowadays is a blessing!

I too switched to fully synthetic motor oil about a month ago and immediately noticed almost 1MPG better. I didn't use AMSOIL, just good ol' Mobile1. I will probably be changing all other fluids to synthetic soon.

First: MPG differences between Winter and Summer

Now that Winter is gone --- the fuel additive MTBE is no longer required. I have seen tests where fuels using the MTBE additive reduced MPG by as much as 15%.
__________________________________________________

NOTE: MTBE is being phased out across the country. It was introduced as an additive to reduce emmissions during cold Winter months. It is getting into underground water supplies and contaminating our waters. 10% Ethanol and NEWLY Developed Additives will be taking it's place.

The $64,000 Question: Was it better for the government to impose the use of MTBE to SLIGHTLY reduce emmissions --- even though it reduced MPG by as much as 15%. We were forced to burn 15% more fuel and therefore a greater quantity of emmissions could have made it into the atmosphere.

Second: Switching to Synthetics does improve MPG

Fuel economy can be very difficult for the consumer to accurately gauge. However --- It has been proven by AMSOIL, through use of industry accepted fuel economy tests, field demonstrations and as witnessed by most of our customers, that switching to synthetic oils and lubricants can (and does) improve fuel economy (mpg).
__________________________________________________

Reasons MPG may vary:

If you fill up at a warmer part of the day one week compared to the previous week you can sometimes see a huge fluctuation in MPG just based on that. Same holds true for colder weather, whereby it will seem like you got the same or less MPG than when compared to warmer weather.

Also, the pump may have stopped pumping later one week compared to the last, making it "seem" like you used more (or the same) gallons of fuel.

Different driving conditions per tank full also makes a difference.
__________________________________________________

Better MPG with a lower viscosity:

Also, I've observed a MPG increase when switching grades (5w-30 compared to 10w-40).
__________________________________________________

Remember, hoping to obtain better MPG is NOT the only reason to switch to synthetic lubricants.

I'd have to agree, 3 miles more pure gallon is doubtful. Personally I use Amsoil in both my Dakota and Saturn with complete satisfaction, but never really saw a jump in gas mileage. The main reason I switched was because of the extended drains. The Saturn's oil life monitor would go on at about 6,000 miles with dino oil. With Amsoil I'm currently at 9,200 miles and still going strong. Great product.

To continue: VISCOSITY can affect MPG

Also, depending upon driving habits, conditions, and climate ... switching viscosities can improve fuel economy also. I've observed a MPG increase when switching grades ( to a 5w-30 vs. a 10w-40).

Tighter government regulations and increases in engine manufacturers’ demands are calling for more fuel efficient lubricants. Amsoil Synthetic Motor Oils reduce friction and drag better than petroleum oils, resulting in significant fuel economy increases.

In a recent 1.2 million mile demonstration, AMSOIL Lubricants showed a 4.5% increase in gas mileage. Other tests have shown increases of as much as 15% under certain weather and driving conditions. Yet, because every vehicle is different, as are driving habits and conditions, it is difficult to accurately project an exact increase.

I use the "universal" ATF (great stuff)

and ......

The "Severe Gear" Gear Lubricant solved the banging and
chattering problem that I had with my LSD "WITHOUT" the use of
any additional friction modifiers.

I now drive about 45-50 more miles between fill-ups according
to my low fuel light.

Took my or Dk to dealer for first oil change and waited for an hour and half. On the way home on freeway noticed that hood bouncing. They didnt close it all the way. Perhaps a minor error but really bugs me. I would rather change it myself and switch to synthetic. Have 2500 miles on the truck.
If I go elsewhere or do it myself and switch to synthetic am I compromising my warranty??

Hey 05, no you are not putting your warranty coverage at risk. As a matter of fact, several Dodge service departments offer Amsoil in the service centers.

The only thing that WOULD potentially put your warranty at risk is extending the drain intervals. While they would have to be able to show that whatever damage caused could have been avoided with oil changes, the bottom line is that they have lawyers on staff, and you don't. It's not fair, but the way or the world.

If you check out the Amsoil XL 7500 it's price to do it yourself in a 4.7 I think was around $23 including the purchase of a decent filter. That's around what you'd pay some grease monkey to change your oil. So do it yourself for the same money and know you're doing a quality job.

I do it myself with the cheaper XL and will until the warranty is up. At that point I MIGHT switch to the better Amsoil and see about a little extension of the drain intervals.

Just my $.02.

You had better believe Amsoil works! If it didn't I wouldn't use it in a 1993 Dakota, 1994 Dakota, 1996 Oldsmobile and a 1995 Plymouth Neon. Also, you are using an American made product, made in America. I don't know if Mobile One can make that claim or not. I just prefer to use a good product and keep American's working here at home!

Ok, here's my Amsoil story... Two years ago, I changed
my oil and switched to Amsoil. After checking for leaks,
I drove to the gas station and filled up my truck...

I've since put over 30,000 miles on it without having to
re-fuel. In fact I've still got a little over a half tank!
Instead of gas, I just add a little Stabil every fall so the
gas doesn't go bad...

Let me tell you guys, Amsoil is the best thing since the
Ronco turkey oven. I'd bet my trailer, err house on it...

As to mpg, i can say that it makes a little easier to obtain 20 plus MPG.

Now i want to change the transmission oil, but i have not seen any oil from Amsoil for the NV 3500 (5 manual). Does any one?

Changed the filter and topped it back off in the ginea pig, er, I mean the 2004 Grand Caravan we have :)

It's been 7,500 miles since I changed to Amsoil. I used a Fram filter (which I heard SUCKS).
As you see, I bought one from amsoil.
I think I heard someone mention Wal-Mart selling GOOD oil filters?
Or should I just order a Amsoil filter each time?

The oil actually looked pretty good, what leaked all over my hand when I pulled the filter anyway.
Nice thing is on the van, unlike my Dak, you can really easily reach the oil filter up front side of the engine and even fill the filter up before you screw it back on.
Bad thing I noticed is quite a bit of oil leaks out when I pulled the filter. so I had to add NEW oil to the filter plus add about another pint or so to fill it back up.

Lucky I had plenty this time.

Graphite,

Speaking of filters:

The Walmart Supertech oil filter you mentioned is manufactured by Champion Labs - which also makes Mobil 1, K&N, Supertech, AC Delco DuraGuards (two different types) for USA, Bosch Premium, STP, Ultraguard Gold, Deutch & Luberfiner.

NOTE: The Walmart Supertech is a good filter , but it is not a great filter (only a 20 micron filter), and it is not designed for extended drains -- Amsoil filters are -- so stick with the Amsoil oil filter. However, for approximately $2, the Supertech filter is well constructed for all who might be interested.

When choosing a filter ... FLOW & FILTRATION.
