Subject: steering intermediate shaft

Message:
Hi, here's the dilemma: I've got a 2000 QC 4wd in need of a intermediate steering shaft, the u-joint being well and truly shot. Dealer wants CDN$300 for a new one. When I look on the parts diagram, the shaft doesn't look like the proper part, in fact the whole steering column doesn't look right. The newer models 2001-2004 look like the right item, having a 2-piece upper and lower intermediate shaft. Dealer first quotes $122 for that part, then says there's a 'modification' (re-designed part?) and the price is now $229. So now I have a potential model year/part number discrepency, and 3 different price quotes. Junk yard doesn't have any locally for comparison, but insists I go with the 2000 part as listed.

Here's what I think: 2000 QC uses the newer style steering column as listed for 2001-2004 Dakotas, whereas all other model 2000 Dakotas use the old style 92-99 steering columns. I also recall another poster commenting on an 'improved' version steering shaft.

I don't have access to parts to verify this theory, so I'm taking a chance any way I go. I'd appreciate your first-hand experience, comments, suggestions or knowledge about this, thanks! -John

I can't speak directly to your situation, but I can confirm that the intermediate shaft is a new part, superceding a part that was replaced as a known problem. I had mine changed and they told me that they're seeing a lot of them, and that the replacement part is beefier, or something along those lines anyway..
