Subject: 4 wheel disk swap?
IP: Logged

Message:
Could anyone give me some info on swapping the rear wheel disk from a Durango to Dakota. Doing a drum to disk converson at the same time.
Other than caliper mounts, calipers, hoses, ect obvious things. Are the backing plates on the axel (9 1/4) different? Could I change them? Would the parking brake cable have to be changed? I'd also assume the proportioning valve is different? Would I need the parts from a Dakota? I am looking for some boneyard parts and wanted to know before I slapped down the bread.
Thanks for any help.

looking at doing a four wheel disc conversion too, heres what I've dug up... 03 dakotas came with an optional rear disc package, the first year for it.. many if not all the quad cabs came with them, and the parts can be bought NEW for under 400-500... durango rear brakes appear to have same part numbers, so they should match fine. the rear left parking cable for some reason changes in 03 for the disc set up, not sure of the differences though, as the right side stays the same from I think 01 on up... the rears don't use hoses, only the fronts do, and I haven't checked into the line fittings to see if they are different yet, you might end up having to get the rear axle brake line (metal lines for the rear)... I dunno if I'd swap proportioning valves, that gets into changing parts that affect the rear antilock brakes.. could get to be expensive and a messy project... I'd just swap out the mechanical parts... keep in mind that the rear typically only handles about 20% or less of the braking power, they are there mainly to stablize the rear end from braking force trying to swing the assend around while the front stops. The backing plate houses the parking brake assembly, and also is your caliper mount. you should be able to do some cross referencing on www.moparpartz.com, and salvage u can use www.car-part.com

Wow, athenian, looks like you did some homework! Thanks for the info as ive considered doing this too. The stock braking just isnt there on the D's..kind of like the front suspension. Let us know if you do this upgrade.

I'm sure I'm missing something here, but didn't your truck come with 4 wheel disc brakes? I see your name is 2003 4.7, and to the best of my knowledge 2003 dakotas had 4wheel discs. Mine did anyway and the research I did at the time said it was made that way for the 2003-04 model years..

I done the 4 wheel disk on some cars and trucks, but have not done my 97 Dakota yet. What I have learned for the others is the proportioning valve either has to be changes or add one for racing (that you can Adjust). The problem is the drum brakes take more fluid to move the pads than calipers. The back will lock up before the front. Adding or changing the value is must. I think Jegs has them for under $100 and you don't have to mess with the anti-lock system. I hope to get all my parts together but this summer

Hey athenian, thanks for the info and links, that'll help a bunch. I'm mostly trying to do the swap so the rears will be more consistent without all the adjusting.
Justi, not all 2003 DAK's came with disk, it was a $750 option through my local dealer for '03. Thnk the standard thing came in '04
sfhobicat, I'd thought of an adjustable prop. valve too but the stock one may be OK and a little cheaper on a junker.
Keep ya'll posted on anything I try out.

Here's a further strange question.

I was speaking to a brake repair tech and he said that going to discs in the rear is a bad idea. He stated that, with all the crap and stuff flung up by the front that hits the rear, I'd be going through the rear discs at twice the rate of the fronts.

Is it a good idea to swap?

why would you even want rear disc? i mean, what for? a dakotas brakes as it comes stock, are fine. ill pull cars and trucks around on a 2000lbs car hauler, and have no problem stopping, and the trailer doesnt have trailer brakes. i can understand if it was a mud bogger, cause mud clogs drum brakes, or if it was built up into a hod rod, but other than that, why would you want to do that? im really just wondering....

I'm doing the rear disc for conveinence. I HATE< let me say that again, I F"N HATE rear drums. I work as a technician, and the time it takes to replace is a pain, even though you hardly ever have to do the rears even a 1/3 of the times you have to do the fronts, the rear disc set up uses less moving parts ( equals less to fail!) AAANND they look 10X better. I own an R/T, and have decided to do a Viper disc brake swap from GSMOTORSPORTS.com ... grand total, $3500.00 I'm going for looks, performance, and ease of replacing parts... Plus, it ups the resale value if I decide to sell... and it'll do the same for a standard rear disc conversion... BTW< SSBC offers a kit to do the rears for around 600, I think KRCperformance.com has it...
yeah, the rears can get dirtier, IF you're going off road. My truck never hits offroad, and tucked into the rims, the actual ability to even get anything significant into the rotor/caliper is unlikely... Plus, think of the Gravitational force... the drums through all their dust and debris into the braking surface area, while disc throws it away from the area... and proof is when you remove the drums... you'll find a few ounces of brake dust in there, on worn brakes. Another thing, look around at how many cars are using rear disc... almost every manufacturer going to them, even on the daks... rear disc are just more reliable, and as someone pointed out, take less effort/ less fluid ( thanks for correcting my proportioning valve miss) to operate.

Oh, just in case you're wondering how I've come across all this info, I went to a tech school right out of HS, and took a few courses on designing brake systems, from the ground up. I've built four vehicles brake systems myself, out of standard production parts from various years. oh, and I have way too much time on my hands.

Building form standard production stuff.
Isn't that what AMC did with their vehicles for many years LOL! (Ford ignition, Dodge tranny, etc etc).

Dragon. I've got about 30K miles on my Dak. It has rear disk brakes as big as the fronts. And I'f taken it hauling ASS off roading.
the fronts and rears are pretty close to about even. Maybe a little more gone on the fronts, which is NORMAL.

Being such a LARGE brake in the rear it seems to stop my trailers really well when I've had to. I would have to say way better than drums usually do.

Now We've also got a 2004 dodge Grand Caravan SXT, etc etc with 4 wheel disk. I already had to replace the front BEFORE 20K miles! The right front failed somehow, where the pad busted off of the disk I think because it was practically metal to metal instalntly and lucky the wife said something for me to change them in time.
She must really hit them brakes driving the van to work.

hehehe/// yeah, AMC.. god they had some really neat stuff. the Javalin was a badass car, so was the AMX, ... it's wierd though, if I remeber right, they got bought out by Dodge, Right? what I meant, was that I used parts from several years from the same manufacturer..to make one system for one vehicle...

Well. That 258 I6 AMC engine first used in the mid 60's I think, changed slightly and I think a few cube less, was used as the 4.0 JEEP engine for YEARS until VERY recently!

Of course I'm sure Dodge stopped using the FORD ignition on it like AMC did :)

I believe you're right Athenian - bought out by Mopar, who took over Jeep and destroyed casting forms and stampings for everything else. Used parts from several different manufacturers, weren't the transmissions usually mopar ?

Does anyone know of a vendor for a complete drum-to-disc conversion kit for the newer Dakotas? I've got an '05 Dakota 2WD with the 4.7 V8 and A/T. If available, I'd prefer a kit that uses the same pads as the front, for the sake of consistency.

Any help is appreciated.

I've got a SSBC rear disc conversion on my '01 RC, and can't imagine going back to rear drums. www.ssbrakes.com They list up to 2004; ask them about 2005.
