Subject: Moog Lower Ball Joints and Zerks
IP: Logged

Message:
Now that 04Sport squared me away with part numbers, I have a question regarding zerk fittings(sorry if it's dumb):

Do the zerks that come with the Moog lower ball joints go straight into the ball joint? I was reading some instructions from a member here and they talked about lining the new ball joint up with a hole in the control arm....and that the fitting goes in the control arm. I don't see any hole for a fitting in my control arm. If someone could set me straight I'd appreciate it. BTW: It's an '04 4WD.

Thanks,
Jim

Sorry to ask again, but I'd like to order the ball joints very soon. Does anyone know how the zerks fit on a greasable (like moog I think) ball joint on a 2004 (assuming same as 2003)? I just don't want to order one and find out that the control arm is supposed to have a hole in it for the zerk and I'm out of luck. Thanks again in advance.

Which part number are you ordering? I can look up mine and tell you if they're the same as the Y2K.

If they're the same as the 2000, the zerks go in a recess in the top of the balljoint casing. They should be installed so that the zerks "point forward" so you can get to 'em easy on the ground.

The tops of these housings protrude about 3/8" or so above the LCA casting, and there is a groove for a big snapring at the top of the casting as a safety retention measure. The zerk sits just above this snapring. The stock balljoint does not protrude above the LCA casting like this, it is flush.

It's difficult to describe, hope that helps.

Thanks CP and SteveC. The part number I'm looking at is the Moog K7395. I think I followed your description Steve. It doesn't look like there is much room for a zerk above my stock bj, but I think your describing something like this:

....--------
...|||||||||||||==> zerk
...---------- snap ring
...|||||||||||||
...|||||||||||||
....\\\\////
.....\\\///
......|||||
.......--

* (Ignore the periods...when trying to post the spaces kept getting removed.)

I know that's not a great drawing, but is it in the ballpark (regarding the zerk orientation)? Thanks very much.

My parts were the same, and your ASCII art says it perfectly.

I emailed you a crappy cellphone pic from my truck that shows it from the front. The zerk is facing the camera.

Glad to help...

I just had Moog lower control arm ball joints
pressed in at the shop, but they didn't orient the
zerks forward. I've put everything back together
and now I can't get to the zerks. Anyone have any
suggestions how I can get that ball joint lubricated
short of taking everything apart?
