Subject: THANKS to ALL Dak owners!
IP: Logged

Message:
Since I was looking forward to buying an 05 QC SLT, I came on this board expecting to hear experiences of other DAK owners and messages about how much they loved their trucks. Instead I saw many messages related to all kind of problems especially front end and rear differential, complaints about stying especially in the 05's and general complaints about gas mileage.
It made me rethink what I was looking for and I found a new vehicle.. the Nissan Xterra.
FOR a CHEAPER price, the X has better gas mileage, 21-22 for a standard, all wheel anti lock brakes (SLT-rear option), all wheel traction control(SLT-rear option), on demand rear locking differential (SLT none), vehicle stability control (SLT none), better inside trim, better outside styling, enclosed cargo area of an SUV (SLT need to buy tonneau cover @ $600 for 3 piece folding), automatic dimming rear mirror with compass (SLT none), other little features to many to mention.
So, although I really liked the 05 Dakota, I want to really thank all posters here that CHANGED MY MIND!

Now you've got no way to haul the manure you're full of! You have a suv-instead of a truck! No v8 power and your riding in a tin can. Do they have an xterra site? If so I'm sure there are some complaints with your new ride.

i am a big nissan fan. the truck before my dodge was a nissan frontier and i am very active on all nissan offroad boards. i think you will be very pleased with the new Xterra. but dont think they dont have any problems though, the new frontier and xterra have both had thier share of owners problems/complaints. it is a first year vehicle so small things can be expected. hope you have good luck with yours, i hear that new 4.0 is a real sweet motor

just thought i would add that the only real reason im driving a dakota now is because dodge gave me 7,500 off msrp and gave me great service. Even adding parts to my truck after delivery free of charge. i have now racked up 13k trouble free miles and i do love my dakota. so while dakotas do have thier share of problems so does about any vehicle make or model. my truck does everything i ask it to do so i have no complaints

Lenny: I don't see how some current Dakota owners not liking the styling of the 2005 was a reason to not buy one. (An SUV being a better fit for what you wanted, which is how it sounds, certainly is a good reason -- have fun with the new ride.)

Let me know what your actual mpg is after you pass the 500 "break-in" miles. I bet it's not in the 21-22 range :)

A buddy at work has a 2wd 04 xterra, he works midnight to 9am so his commute has no traffic going to work and he's going against the flow on his way home. My '95 SLT CC 4x4 with 3.9L V6 gets as good of gas milage as his X does and I drive in rush hour traffic!

Don't get me wrong, I like the nissans. If i get a vehicle that is not a dodge, it will be a nissan.

You must be comparing the full list sticker price of the Dakota with what you paid for your SUV. If you did any shopping whatsoever any fool could get a lower price on a Dakota pickup than an Xterra SUV. Gas mileage will be similar.

I'm glad you bought the vehicle you wanted. Every vehicle made has problems of some sort. My wife wanted an XTerra and they seemed pretty solid but I just couldn't get around the looks...I'm not a fan. I talked her into a Jeep and we're both happy. I love my Dak...warts and all.

Japper,
Prices were compared retail to retail, and even if the Dakota was less price, the Xterra still has all the off road traction control limited slip features in addition to 265 hp standard vs the dodge's 210 hp or 230 with the V8. Torque is about the same.

Even though the Xterra's V6 puts out a good bit more HP and about the same tourque as the 4.7 V8 in the Dak, if you'll be doing any heavy hauling the V8 will still have a bit if an advantage because of the 2 extra cylinders. There's no replacement for displacement as the saying goes.

What's the torque on that, that you'd claim its about the same as a 4.7 ? I tend to doubt that - basically that's why they say there's no replacement for displacement. Its not so much the extra 2 cylinders; its the torque curve that matters.

Lead, follow, or get out of the way

Well, here's your first potential problem with the Xterra... In a test of the rear bumpers on several SUV's, the Xterra rated worst. In a 10mph impact, not only was the hatch damaged - the rear window shattered. Good luck :-)

A few sites with Xterra Problems, every one has it's own, but if you were wondering about gas mileage, do some reading.

I've had some Nissan's. Pretty reliable.

BUT.. someone here who LIKES to play with the mechanics EVEN when it's not broken... that's where the Nissan's SUCK total.

Look under the hood of a Dodge. Then look under the hood of a Nissan. Cound how many vacuum hoses and other BullSh*t there is to make it work. Then come back and look at a Dodge with (and I'm not kidding) 1/3 the bullsh*t and that's why a Dodge is actually a PLEASURE to mess with under the hood.

On my last Nissan I could not even install a CAI. There was about 3 fukking sensors molded IN the rubber intake tube in between the filter and the TB.
WTF? Dodge ONLY has a IAT in the intake tube. And it's easy to move.
My friend has a 2004 Frontier (right before the change again to the 4.0).
His is bullsh*t as far as engine controls goes.

And actual torque curve IS important.

Look at my thread when I towed a massive 20+ foot long trailer last sunday. Then ask yourself if that would have even been possible with a 4.0 (with it's higher HP rating and all).
I think NOT!
Power in a small window of RPM's compared to GOOD power throughout is a night and day difference.

A little note about my personal experience with 1 nissan dealership.

I moved to a new house in December, at that time, I got a new home phone #. In march while I was at work, my wife took 5 phone calls from 5 differnet people at Team Nissan (dealer in the Atlanta area). These 5 phone calls took place between noon and 3pm. Everytime, my wife was upset but polightly told all of them to stop calling, that person does not have this phone anymore. Each person said they would update their records. They were all looking for someone who had previously had my "new" home phone number. They were calling because it had been 1 year since this person purchased some nissan vehicle from them.

After I got home around 6pm, we went out and returned around 8:30 pm. In that time frame, we had 2 voice mails from 2 other people at Team Nissan, one the dealership manager. So, in 1 day, we have 7 differnet people from the dealer call our house, 5 of which were informed to stop calling.

The next day I called and spoke to the manager that left the vm. He told me that the reason we got the calls was that I had a new phone number. Well no sh!t dumb@ass. I asked him why he was harassing me, he said it was not him that called. I corrected him telling him I had a VM from him and 6 other people,5 of which told not to call. Again, I asked why. He said he would see what he can do to help me out. I told him there was no see, only doing. He told me that the person in charge of updating records was out today. I told him that was his problem, he is the manager and needs to assure me that noone else would call. He refused to do so.

Thankfully, noone else called. Though it was hoping someone did :)

moral of the story, you get never ending customer service from Nissan :P
