I have a 00 and am in the same boat. I have done some posting about this and someone said that the parts are really expensive. And no, the wires are not already ran. Apparently that is the expensive part. Someone on the group said about $1000. That right there turned me off. If you hear anything different, let me know.

I hate that little clip. I did some research to replace that clip with the mileage computer in the overhead console. I researched it out to see what I would have to do and cost. I went to the dealer to find the cost. It was $200 for head unit and $600 for wireing. Don't ask me why so much but that was the cost. Add instilation on top of that as well. Sooooo. I got to thinking since I have a 00 dak slt loaded with everything but leather and the computer, I thought it might be prewired. I took the console off and sure enough no prewireing. So I got to thinking again and I would buy the unit and wireing off a totaled dak in a junk yard. I have not looked into that price as of yet cuz i don't know what is in the instalation of the wireing. I don't know if it would be worth it. Once I find that so I know what is in the process such as where to mound temp sensor and such. I would check the local junk yards. If you have any hints that would help. Thanks.

Hey Kevin thanks. I am going to look here but I would like to know what is involved with installing the wireing to see if it is worth the work. I am going to the library this weekend to check the chiltons book to see if they have anything on the installation. Thanks

Unfortunatly, I don't think they have a chiltons book on our trucks yet. I think they will make one when our current vehicle style changes. Not sure?? If they do, let me know.

Just a heads up......

I have been looking into the situation. Looks like it is prewired. They just tucked it in the head liner way up there. I think. I am going to pull off my head liner in 2 saturdays. I am going Atving this sooo.... it has to wait. I have checked at 3 junk yards and they don't have any totaled durangos or dak. They say people buy them from insurence companys and fix them up and sell them with salvage titles. (remember when buying used car look at the title first) The price on the head unit from factory has gone up in an year to $309. Must have some new features. I am going to library to night to look for a chiltons book. Soooooooo.... I will have some more news in a bit.

I will scan the part list and #'s during the week and post that as well.

I have been doing some research on this as you know....

My 2000 slt does not have the temp sensor installed. It sits on the passager side just in front of the radiator. There are 4 or 5 holes predrilled for it. It is a pointy sensor. I have the holes but no sensor. The plug for the sensor is taped and tucked away. sooo..... No sensor. As for wireing for the head unit. I have 3 wires to the overhead console. I figure ground, power, and I am guessing wire for the head unit. I am not sure. I have only been able to find 1 head unit. And that junk yard was going to send it in from denver. He was going to charge 200 bucks. Not worth it to me. I was only able to find one totaled '99. No head unit or temp sensor. I am bummed. I will still look around but not as diligently. Any one else have any lead????????

Any would be appreciated.

I am in the same boat with you guys. I already have a computer on the way from ebay that I paid 250 bucks for. As for the wiring my dealer told me that the harness was 37 bucks and that the temp sensor was 16 bucks. I don't know. I have checked a couple other places and they told me pretty much what you guys had heard that the wiring was 300 to 500 and one even told me that I had to have a new pcm. I don't think so. I"m going to go ahead and order the wiring harness and temp sensor and see my dealer for some diagrams. I'll let you know as soon as I work on it. I should have the console by Wed but won't be able to get the parts till Sat and can't look at my truck till then either because the dealer has it replacing a balljoint. Anyone else who has had any luck please let me know what you have found.

I recently purchased a 2003 quad cab. It’s fully loaded but didn’t come with the elusive overhead computer. After reading most of the postings. I was able to obtain an overhead computer on Ebay. I’m interested in hardwiring the overhead computer. The only option in the computer that I am interested in is the compass and outside temperature sensor. The computer I have has four wires attached to it. I know that one wire is the constant power, the second is ground and the third is the ignition power. I’m not sure what the forth is I’m assuming it the Outside temp reading. I got the compass to work but cant figure out how to get the outside temp to work. My truck came with a senor for outside temp. The senor has two wire going into it. How can I hardwire my over head computer so that my outside temp works. Also does anybody know what PCI bus stands for, and were can I find it in my truck. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

I installed the overhead in my 99 318. The truck was NOT pre wired for the computer. I went to a junkyard found a Dakota that had one. I had 2 options... 1, remove the whole dash harness and replace mine or 2, find the connector that plugs into the overhead and remove just the wires I needed ..... I chose #2 ... I had to follow the wires down to 2 plug connectors in the lower left of the dash... remove the pins from the connector noting the location of the pins. Then all I had to do was plug the pins into the same location in my harness and run the wires over head. I did have to do a little of splicing of wires to connect to the overhead lights but it was no big deal

Hey guys, if there are only 4 connectors, the 4th isn't temp. It goes to the computer, so it can get temp, mileage, etc. Remember these vehicle computers already know the mileage, and the two wires from the temperature sensor probably go to the computer as well.

Brian C, if you are still around, what exactly did you plug into, splice to get that forth wire hooked up?

The temp sensor may or may not be in place. In this posting it was not.(http://www.dodgedakota.net/boards/gen/13483.html)

The temp sensor wires into the A/C Heater control system.

Here is my understanding of how the overhead computer is connected. I hope it helps.

Dodge uses what is known as a CANbus system that works something like the serial port on your computer. The difference is that the CANbus specification allows a large number of "smart" devices to reside on the "bus". These devices can just listen, talk, or do both on the bus. They each have an identifier when they talk to indicate what device they are and what kind of information they are placing on the bus.

CANbus requires three wires to operate. One wire is ground and the other two are used like RS-485 communications. The four wires issuing from the overhead console computer are +12V, GND, RX+, and RX- where the RX wires are used for transmission/reception on the bus.

The temperature sensor connects to a CANbus sending unit, probably the PCM, that converts the electrical signal to a digital value that it places on the CANbus. The overhead computer detects all messages on the CANbus and determines when a temperature "packet" has been transmitted. It then displays the temperature value in that packet.

The other information displayed on the overhead computer--fuel economy, distance to empty, etc.--are similarly obtained via the CANbus from other devices.

Having a 2003 Cummins Turbo Diesel, I would like to hack the CANbus system and see if I could design a few additional sensors to put on it (EGT,Boost Pressure,Transmission Temperature). If these devices work and play well with the others, then I would like to replace the overhead with one of my own design that would provide these new readings also.

One fly in the proverbial ointment, however, is that many of the CANbus signals on the 2003 and newer Dodge trucks are being intercepted by the PCM and either altered or absorbed to prohibit third party devices from reading the information. I've not done enough research to find out exactly how this is being accomplished, but I would expect that either the PCM or an additional board is being used as a router supplying signals to the diagnostic port and that it is these signals that are being edited and not those on the general CANbus.

Anyway, best of luck on your projects.
