Subject: P0455 Code

I keep getting the P0455 trouble code. I have checked all of the hoses, tightened the gas cap and replaced the solenoid valve(the one mounted to the firewall) I checked the valve while it is running and it is not opening. I am getting 12v to the valve but have read that the PCM controls the opening and closing of the valve under certain conditions by completing the circuit to ground. Anyone have this problem? - Anyone know where I can get a schematic? I can't reregister the truck until till it is fixed!
Any help would be greatly appreciated
Thanks
Steve

Got from a google search

Code P0455

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Description:
Evap Leak Monitor Large Leak Detected
Leak has been detected in the evaporation system.

Resolution:
From Chuck Robbins:
Basically the evaporation system is a containment system for fuel fumes. The most common cause for this code (If memory serves me correct) is a faulty gas cap.

From Bob Smith:
If everything else checks out, and you still get this code with the gas cap tight, check the O-ring (seal) on the cap. It may have dryrotted or otherwise be damaged

From Bob Tom:
I would check the electrical connection and the condition of the connector at the evap. purge solenoid (driver's side bolted to the firewall) just to make sure that solenoid can function as it should (won't help if solenoid is plugged or bad though). The PCM controls the ground side of this solenoid (it is normally open). When energized by the PCM, the vent solenoid will close, sealing off the fresh air side of the system. The PCM only does this when it is running its evap monitor (self-test).

See http://www.motorage.com/edindex/109828.htm for a far better description of the system.

I got it early on and my gas cap had a crack in it. Replacing it caused the code to go away.

Thanks Izzy, I have checked the gas cap as well as the oring and everything looks fine. I believe on some makes the valve is normally open. On the Dakotas,(at least mine anyway) the valve is normally closed and when energized, opens to allow manifold vacuum to the tank. I read where the P0455 error is characterized by either a "large leak" or "no flow". Since the valve is not opening then it would follow that this is a no flow condition - at least I think - who knows

Mine was apparently cracked up inside the area of the cap whereit "clicks" when you screw it back on after getting gas.

The crack was not obvious and was only determined to be the problem after putting a new cap on and clearing the code and it did not come back.

I think I found the problem. When I initially checked the cap, I found the o-ring to be fine, I removed the ratcheting portion and inspected for cracks and didn't seen any. I even blew into the end of the cap and no leakage. I got to thinking after Izzy's last post when he stated that the crack wasn't obvious. So I went back and check my cap again, although this time rather than blow on the end of the cap, I sucked on it(that sounds bad I know)and sure enough air came through. There are four small holes in the bottom of the cap and what appears to be some sort of diaphram which must have a crack or hole in it. Thanks for the input guys

texasboy77904,

Now that you mention it, when I took the wife's Durango in to get the ball joints changed out, they said they also replaced some evap hoses that were dryrotted and cracking (no code yet) and told me not to worry because it fell under warranty coverage.

I think your stealership needed lunch fund money and got it from you.

I also have this code on my 02 dakota 3.9 v6, replaced the gas cap, still throwin the code, so i imagine i would start looking at evap hoses and connections for wear i.e cracks and leaks correct?
