Subject: What actually improves mpg?
IP: Logged

Message:
93 6 cylinder 3.9L auto, 12-14 mpg. There are a lot of things on the market, and I want to know what products could I buy, or things I could do, to improve my mpg. Whats worth the money? I would appreciate any help.

Lifting your right foot. Generally anything you do to your vehicle that effects fuel economy (in a good way) is counter acted by the new found fun you find with your right foot. Sure you may get a tab bit better fuel economy by gong with a free flowing exhaust and intake, but 9 times out of 10 you find yourself driving a little more spirited becaus it sounds good and feels good.

From experience with 02 Ram 4x4 and 04 Dak 4x4, both with 4.7 auto, three things to improve mpg.
1) K&N air filter - 2 mpg better
2) Champion platinum plugs - 1 mpg better
3) easy on the throttle, use cruise control, stay within 10 mph over the hwy speed limit

As someone posted a few days ago, "You can have either miles per gallon, or smiles per gallon, but not both."

04 Dak QC 4x4 5 spd auto 4.7 K&N 19 mpg hwy

Thanks for your help choochoo. I may try some of those things you installed. I have been thinking about a filter and maybe an intake. I have read on these forums the tornado is a joke so I'm not buying one of those. Also ive been wondering if this fuel atomizer really would work:
http://www.doubleyourmiles.com
And I only get 14mpg when I do drive easy.

Most mods will improve your gas mileage, but like the others have mentioned...you usually don't notice because your right foot tends to get heavier afterward.

Please tell me that you were kidding when you posted that link. That ranks up there with the tornado, it's really a big joke for anybody that knows anything about how engines work.
You can spend $1,000 on performance enhancing parts that may increase your mpg by about 1% but in all honesty that mpg increase is not realized because your right foor gets heavier......99% of the time.

Well even if you spent a ton of money on all those mods and didn't see any increase in gas mileage (in fact, you'd prolly see a decrease), at least the fun factor just skyrocketed...lol

hybrid, I noticed you said "That ranks up there
with the tornado" Everyone back stabing Tornado
but last weekend I was watching Trucks on the
Spike channel (yes another re-run) and at the end
of the show (if you want to call it that anymore)
to the part for selling aftermarket stuff, they
showed a spacer for the intake that has curled
ribs. They are there to cause the air flow to
swirl, thus better gas mileage. I don't remember
the name of the company that sells them but it's
a well known one.

So, doesn't this well known company that sells
this "spacer" doing the same rip off as the
company that sells the "Tornado"?

My point is, why bother doing anything about gas
mileage. There isn't ONE honest company out
there! Keep your foot off the gas and you'll
save gas. Or do what I do every spring, park the
Dakota and uncover the six banger 79 AMC.

Just my 2 cents worth guys.

check your tire pressure at least once a month. drive under 65. every 5mph over 65 uses approx 7% more fuel. in my dak (5 speed manual) i try not to rev past 2500 rpm or for sure try to beat that stupid shift lift.

also, make sure your truck is in perfect tune. and if you want put syn fluids in everything, tranny, diff, engine.

that's my .02

Wouldn't the car makers put the "Tornado" or whatever on there already, if it actually did any good?

daddio hit on the two most important, and least expensive things anyone can do to better their mileage. Tire pressure and synthetics.

Joe-physics101 sez imprv efficiency=hi r milage.
IE:1-improve cyl scavanging-lower exhaust back pressure& dont disrupt exhaust pulses
2-make it easier for air/fule to get into cyl-keep clean pleated paper, or replace w/ K&N. Most
current vehic. have CAI (cold air intake) Repl w/expensive "prettier" nor worth it.
3-less HP "wasted"= better mil- loose fan&clutch
keep tire press @ max;syn oils,try diff plugs;LOSE WEIGHT-smaller batt&/or tires.Cat-bak
GLASSPAK exhaust,K&N filter, & lost fan on my 01 Dak 4.7AWD auto QC. City went from 12.7 to 14.4
MPG !! COST=$300, & yes rt foot now heavier. :)
ps-also run mix of 87 & 89/91 oct.gas to keep
spark adv @ max..thinkin about "suprChip" nxt, but then you HAVE to run 89oct min. Lots to think about-stay away from the "gadgets" Good luk w/yur truk & let us know. krellco

keep your tires rotated regularly as well.

last rotation i did they told me the pressure was fine, so i wasnt expecting any diff in mpg, but there was a noticeable diff indeed.

stems from the same reason for air pressure - better contact means better use of the power.

my 60k mi tuneup also incresed my mpg, or it at least restored it. (new wires, plugs, cap/rotor)
yes, i said mpg, not power. i keep my rpms down, and take advantage of the 'extra' efficiency of the new parts.
(ok, so once in a while i do stomp on it)

krellco, FWIW the 4.7 has no knock sensors. also, if the gas station has one hose for three grades they are mixing 87 and 91/93 to get mid-grade anyway.

Well thanks for all of the advice. I will try the air filter and synthetics for sure. But what the helll, I am going to give some of those products that say they'll improve mpg, at least the ones with the 30-90 day money back guarantees. I'll get back to you all on if any of them really work.

Is K&N the best filter? How much? ANY synthetics?
